The KNKA PD22SC-12 is a portable compressor dehumidifier for damp rooms such as basements, laundry rooms, garages and crawlspaces. It pulls moisture from the air into a tank, or out through a hose, and holds the humidity at a level you choose.
What "34 pints" and "2,500 sq ft" mean
KNKA says the unit removes up to 34 pints of moisture per day, measured at 95°F and 90% relative humidity. Those are demanding test conditions, so in a typical home the daily amount is usually lower. The brand also rates it for areas up to 2,500 sq ft. Note that 34 pints is the removal rate, not the tank size: the tank holds 3 litres.
Three modes
- DEHU lets you set a target from 30% to 80% humidity, with fan control.
- DRY is a quick mode intended for drying clothes.
- CONT runs without stopping, for very damp spaces.
KNKA suggests keeping windows and doors closed while it runs, because otherwise it works on the air outside as well.
Two ways to drain
With the manual option, the unit shuts off automatically when the tank is full and an indicator light shows it needs emptying. For continuous drainage, a 3.28 ft (1 m) drain hose is included. Continuous drainage relies on gravity, so the outlet generally needs to be lower than the hose connection, such as a floor drain.
Controls and noise
The controls set the humidity target, fan speed, timer (up to 24 hours) and child lock. Once the room reaches your target, the unit switches off, and it restarts when humidity rises. KNKA notes the displayed reading is taken at the inlet, so it may differ slightly from a separate humidity meter. The unit runs at 37 dB, according to the brand, and a colour-changing LED shows the humidity, even when the unit is off. Sleep mode turns the lights off and lowers noise further.
Moving and cleaning
It measures about 13.2 x 10.3 x 20.9 inches (33.5 x 26 x 53 cm), with 360° wheels and a handle. The tank is removable and the filter is washable and reusable. KNKA says to keep the unit upright, and to let it stand upright for 24 hours after delivery before the first use.
Who it suits
It suits people with a damp basement, a laundry room that stays humid or a room where clothes are dried indoors.
What to check before you buy
- Room size: compare the rated area with your space and how damp it gets.
- Drainage: decide whether you will empty the tank or run the hose to a drain.
- Temperature: dehumidifiers of this type typically work less well in cold rooms, so check the manual's operating range.
- Placement: leave space around the unit for airflow.
- Noise: 37 dB is a brand figure; real noise varies with fan speed.
- Upkeep: plan to wash the filter and empty the tank regularly.
