The Kismile 5QT Glass Air Fryer cooks in a clear glass basket instead of the usual coated metal drawer, so you can see the food browning without pulling the basket out. The basket is BPA-free and has no coating. It's a compact model, sized for small meals, sides and snacks in apartments, dorms and smaller kitchens.

Why a glass basket

Most air fryers use a metal basket with a nonstick coating. Kismile's basket is glass with no coating at all, which appeals to people who'd rather not cook on coated surfaces or are tired of nonstick finishes wearing over time. Because it's clear, you can check on fries or wings through the side instead of opening the basket repeatedly, which lets heat escape and slows cooking.

Glass behaves differently from metal. It's heavier, it holds heat, and like other glass cookware it doesn't like sudden temperature changes, so read the care instructions in the manual and use oven mitts when handling the hot basket.

1500 W and the less-oil figure

A 1500 W heating system drives fast, even air circulation for crisp results; that wattage is typical of countertop air fryers in this size range. Kismile lists up to 95% less oil than traditional frying.

An air fryer is essentially a small convection oven: a fan moves very hot air around the food so the outside browns and crisps with little or no added oil. The less-oil figure compares it with deep frying; how much you use in practice depends on the food and the recipe.

Presets, temperature and timer

The digital touch panel has eight presets, including wings, steak, fries and pizza, so common foods start with one tap. For anything else, you set the temperature yourself, from 100 to 400°F (about 40 to 200°C), with a timer of up to 60 minutes.

The lower end of the range is handy for gentle reheating, while 400°F covers most crisping and roasting jobs.

What 5 quarts holds

Five quarts is about 4.7 litres. Kismile says the basket fits two to three servings, enough for a small meal, side dishes or snacks. Air fryers crisp most evenly when food sits in a single layer with room for air to move, so for a larger family, a 5-quart basket usually means cooking in batches.

Cleaning

The glass basket and the detachable bottom tray both go in the dishwasher. A built-in oil-separating base collects excess grease below the food, keeping it out of the basket. With no coating, there's no nonstick surface to wear out, though the manual's advice on scrubbers and cleaning products still applies to the glass.

Who it suits

It suits apartments, dorms and anyone who cooks small portions and likes to keep an eye on the food. At about 13.2 x 10 x 11.2 inches (34 x 25 x 28 cm), it fits on a small counter. Households that regularly cook for four or more may find the capacity limiting.

What to check before you buy

  • Counter space and weight: about 13.2 x 10 x 11.2 inches and 11 lb (5 kg).
  • Capacity: two to three servings; think about your usual portion sizes.
  • Handling: check how the glass basket lifts out and what the manual says about caring for it.
  • Power: 1500 W; avoid sharing a circuit with other high-draw appliances such as a kettle or microwave.
  • What's in the box: confirm the included parts, such as any rack or tray.
