The Cosori Gooseneck Electric Kettle is a 0.8-litre stainless steel kettle with built-in temperature control. It is designed for two jobs that ordinary kettles do poorly: heating water to a specific temperature for different teas, and pouring slowly and precisely for pour-over coffee. Here is what its features mean in everyday use.

Why water temperature matters

Boiling water suits black tea and many herbal infusions, but it can make delicate teas taste bitter or grassy. Green and white teas are typically brewed well below boiling, oolong a little hotter, and pour-over coffee just off the boil.

The Cosori has five presets: 170, 180, 195, 205 and 212°F (about 77, 82, 91, 96 and 100°C). Between them they cover white, green and oolong tea, coffee (the 205°F preset) and a full boil. A Hold Temp function keeps the water at the chosen temperature for up to 60 minutes, which helps if you brew several pots of tea or come back for a second cup.

The gooseneck spout and pouring

A gooseneck spout is long and narrow, so water leaves in a thin, controllable stream. For pour-over coffee, that lets you wet the grounds evenly, pour in slow circles and control how quickly water passes through the coffee. Cosori shaped the spout for a pour-over flow rate.

The handle is counterbalanced: it moves the kettle's centre of mass back towards your hand. The aim is a steadier, more comfortable pour, which matters most when you're pouring slowly for a few minutes at a time.

Heating speed and capacity

The kettle draws 1,200 watts, and Cosori says it boils a full kettle in 3 to 5 minutes. A capacity of 0.8 litres (about 27 fl oz) is enough for a pot of tea or a couple of large mugs. That is smaller than a standard family kettle, which is typical of gooseneck designs.

Cosori asks for at least 118 ml (about 4 fl oz) of water in the kettle, and never above the MAX line.

Materials and automatic shut-off

The housing, lid and spout are food-grade stainless steel, with no non-stick coating or other lining, so the water is in contact with steel rather than a coated surface.

A STRIX thermostat switches the kettle off once the water reaches the set temperature, and boil-dry protection turns it off if it detects there is no water inside. It beeps three times when it's done.

Descaling and care

Limescale builds up in any kettle in hard-water areas. Cosori's suggested method is to fill the kettle with one cup of vinegar or lemon juice and two cups of water, bring it to the boil and leave it for two hours, then wipe it with a cloth, rinse with clean water and dry it with a soft cloth. Repeat as needed.

Cosori also notes that spots can appear on the stainless steel base after first use where the water is very hard, and suggests using filtered water. Wipe any water from the outside of the kettle and from the base before switching it on.

Who it suits

It suits tea drinkers who brew different styles and want each at a set temperature, and pour-over coffee fans who want a controlled pour, at home or in an office. If you mostly heat large amounts of water for cooking or a big household, a larger kettle will be more practical.

What to check before you buy

  • Capacity: 0.8 litres suits small amounts; check it matches how much water you usually heat at once.
  • Temperatures: check that the five presets cover the temperatures you usually brew at.
  • Counter space: the base needs a spot near an outlet, and the long spout needs clearance.
  • Water hardness: in hard-water areas, plan for regular descaling or use filtered water.
  • Cord and base: check the cord length and how the base sits on your counter.

The short version

  • A 0.8-litre stainless steel gooseneck kettle with five presets from 170 to 212°F (about 77 to 100°C).
  • Hold Temp keeps the water at temperature for up to 60 minutes.
  • Gooseneck spout and counterbalanced handle for a slow, steady pour-over.
  • 1,200 watts; Cosori says a full kettle boils in 3 to 5 minutes.
  • STRIX thermostat shut-off, boil-dry protection and no non-stick lining.
