The AMZCHEF 8-in-1 (model MMF-9117) is an automatic milk frother and steamer that heats with 550 watts of induction. It makes four kinds of foam and has programmes for hot chocolate, cashew milk, soy milk and gentle warming, so one machine can cover lattes, cappuccinos, cocoa and plant-based drinks. Here is what its features mean in everyday use.

Eight programmes, four kinds of foam

Half of the eight programmes are for foam: dense foam, light foam, hot foam and cold foam. The other four are hot chocolate, cashew milk, soy milk and gentle warming.

As a rough guide, dense, velvety foam suits cappuccinos and latte art, while lighter, airier foam suits a latte or a macchiato. Cold foam is frothed without heating, for topping iced coffee or cold brew. Gentle warming heats milk without frothing it, which is handy for drinks where you want warm milk rather than foam.

How induction heating works in a frother

Many frothers heat with an element under the base of the cup, so the milk touching the bottom gets hottest. The AMZCHEF uses IH induction heating instead, which AMZCHEF says spreads heat more evenly around the cup. That helps prevent hot spots, scorching and overheating, a common problem with milk, which tends to catch on a hot surface.

After 60 seconds without use, the frother goes into standby by itself.

How the foam is made

A magnetic-drive whisk spins inside the cup. Because the motor drives it through the base with magnets, nothing passes through the bottom of the jug, and the whisk simply lifts out. AMZCHEF says it keeps the milk circulating quickly for smooth, fine-textured foam.

The milk you use matters. AMZCHEF suggests whole milk with more than 3% fat. In general, the fat and protein in milk affect how much foam forms and how long it holds, and plant-based milks vary widely from one brand to the next, so a little trial and error with your usual carton is normal.

Capacity: 600 ml for heating, 300 ml for frothing

The stainless steel cup holds up to 600 ml (about 20 oz) for heating, or 300 ml (about 10 oz) for frothing. The lower frothing limit is typical, because milk grows in volume as it turns to foam and needs room to expand. That's still enough for several drinks in one batch, so it suits couples, families or a few guests.

Controls, pouring and cleaning

One knob runs everything: turn it to choose a programme, then press to start. An OLED display shows which programme is selected. The jug has a precision pouring spout for more control when pouring, including for latte art.

The jug is made of 304 stainless steel, a type widely used for kitchen equipment, and lifts off the base. The magnetic whisk comes out too, so the cup can be rinsed and wiped without working around fixed parts. Milk residue is easiest to remove before it dries, so a quick rinse straight after use saves scrubbing later. The listing gives the frother's size as about 5.8 x 5.8 x 9.5 inches (roughly 15 x 15 x 24 cm).

Who it suits

It suits people who make milk drinks at home, from cappuccinos and lattes to hot chocolate, and who want automatic programmes instead of steaming milk by hand. The cold foam mode adds options for iced drinks, and the 600 ml heating capacity helps when making drinks for more than one person.

What to check before you buy

  • Counter space: measure against the listed 5.8 x 5.8 x 9.5 inches, allowing room to lift the jug off.
  • Your milk: check whether the dairy or plant-based milk you use froths well; AMZCHEF suggests whole milk above 3% fat.
  • Batch size: remember the frothing limit is 300 ml, half the heating capacity.
  • Cleaning: read the manual's cleaning instructions for the jug, the base and the whisk.
  • Programmes: check the manual for how the cashew and soy milk programmes are meant to be used.
