The AMZCHEF double induction cooktop is a portable two-burner hob that plugs into a standard 120V outlet, with a removable non-stick griddle pan that covers both cooking zones. It can work as a pair of burners for pots and pans or as a long griddle for pancakes, bacon and steaks, which makes it useful wherever a full stove isn't available or isn't enough. Here is how it works and what to check first.
How induction cooking works
An induction hob doesn't heat its glass surface directly. A coil under the glass creates a magnetic field that heats the base of a magnetic pan, so the heat starts in the pan itself. Response to changes in setting is typically quick, and the glass around the pan stays cooler than on a radiant electric hob, although it still gets hot from the pan.
That is also why only certain cookware works. AMZCHEF lists cast iron, iron, steel and enamelled iron, with a base between 4.72 and 9.44 inches (about 12 to 24 cm) across. Its cookware chart also shows stainless steel as suitable, and aluminium, copper, glass and ceramic pans as unsuitable. The simple test: if a fridge magnet sticks firmly to the base, the pan should work. The cooktop also detects cookware: with no suitable pan in place, the display shows E0.
Two zones and how they share power
Each zone has its own controls, combining a knob with touch buttons. The left and right zones are each rated at up to 1100W, but when both run at once, the total stays within 1800W. That limit is common for 120V appliances, because a standard household circuit can only supply so much.
AMZCHEF's chart shows how the zones share power. With the left zone at P5 or lower, the right zone can use all nine power levels. As the left zone goes higher, the right zone's top level steps down, to P5 when the left zone is at P9. In practice, a fast boil on one side means a gentler setting on the other.
Griddle mode and burner mode
The removable griddle pan has a non-stick coating, rubber-covered handles and a lid. It spans both zones, giving a surface of about 16.5 inches long inside its rim, and AMZCHEF describes it as spreading and holding heat well. Settings C1 to C5 are for cooking on the griddle, and the brand says to use the griddle only in this C mode. Settings P1 to P9 are for induction cooking with pots and pans.
The griddle suits pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausages, vegetables and steaks. Without it, the cooktop takes two separate pans, for example pasta water on one side and a sauce on the other.
Size and cleaning
The cooktop measures about 18.1 x 9.1 inches (46 x 23 cm) and 2.1 inches high, or 4.3 inches with the griddle in place, so it fits on most counters and stores in a cupboard.
The cooking surface is polished black ceramic glass that wipes clean with a damp cloth once it has cooled. The griddle pan is dishwasher safe, according to AMZCHEF.
Who it suits
It suits small kitchens, studio apartments and holiday homes, cooks who want extra burners for big meals, and anyone who wants an indoor griddle for breakfasts without a separate appliance.
What to check before you buy
- Cookware: test your pans with a magnet and check their base size.
- Power: use an outlet that can supply 1800W, ideally without other high-draw appliances on the same circuit.
- Cooking style: remember that running both zones at high power at once isn't possible.
- Space: allow room around the unit for ventilation and the griddle handles.
- Care: follow the manual for cleaning and for using the griddle only in C mode.
