The AAOBOSI Espresso Coffee Grinder (model CG223A) is an electric conical burr grinder with 45 grind settings, from fine for espresso to coarse for French press and cold brew. It doses by number of cups or by seconds, has an anti-static outlet to cut down on mess, and is slim enough for a small kitchen. Here's what its features mean in practice.

Why a conical burr matters

A burr grinder crushes beans between two ridged surfaces set a fixed distance apart, so the grounds come out at a fairly consistent size. Blade grinders chop beans unevenly, leaving a mix of powder and chunks that extract at different rates. In a conical design, a cone-shaped burr turns inside a ring-shaped one.

The CG223A has a 40 mm stainless steel conical burr. More uniform grounds let water flow through the coffee more evenly while it brews, which makes results easier to control and repeat, especially when you're adjusting espresso shots.

45 settings, from espresso to cold brew

AAOBOSI splits the range into three bands:

  • Settings 1 to 15: fine, for espresso; the listing also names moka pots at this end.
  • Settings 16 to 30: medium, for drip and pour-over.
  • Settings 31 to 45: coarse, for French press and cold brew.

Treat these as starting points. With espresso, a shot that runs fast and tastes sour usually needs a finer grind, while a slow, bitter shot usually needs a coarser one. New beans or a different roast often need a small adjustment, so having several steps within each band helps.

Dosing by cups or by seconds

The LED display lets you choose the amount by number of cups, from 2 to 12, or set the grinding time from 1 to 40 seconds, and it remembers your last setting. At the same grind setting, timed grinding gives a fairly repeatable amount. A finer setting grinds more slowly, though, so the amount per second changes when you move the dial. Checking the dose with a kitchen scale after changing settings or beans keeps things consistent.

Anti-static outlet and portafilter switch

Static makes coffee grounds cling to the outlet and scatter on the counter, especially in dry air. The anti-static outlet helps reduce that, whether you're dosing into the grounds cup or straight into a portafilter.

For espresso, pressing a portafilter against the switch starts grinding, so you can grind directly into it without pressing buttons on the display.

Hopper, cleaning and size

The 300 g (about 10.5 oz) bean hopper has a shut-off door that keeps the beans in place when you lift the hopper off. Coffee generally stays fresher sealed away from air and light, so many people put only a few days' worth of beans in a hopper at a time.

The burr can be removed for cleaning, which lets you clear old grounds and oils that would otherwise end up in the next dose. The grinder measures 36 cm high, 12 cm wide and 18.5 cm deep (about 14.2 x 4.7 x 7.3 inches), so it fits apartments, small kitchens, offices and home coffee corners.

Who it suits

It suits home coffee drinkers who switch between brewing methods, from espresso to pour-over or French press, and want one grinder on a small footprint.

What to check before you buy

  • Portafilter fit: whether your espresso machine's portafilter sits comfortably under the outlet and against the switch.
  • Espresso range: whether settings 1 to 15 give you the adjustment your machine and baskets need.
  • Height: about 36 cm (14.2 inches), plus room to lift the hopper, against the space under your cabinets.
  • Noise: electric grinders are loud while they run, which matters early in the morning in a shared home.
  • Cleaning: how the burr comes out and how often the manual suggests cleaning it.
