The AAOBOSI C5-A is a portable single-burner induction cooktop with 1800W of power. It adds an extra burner to a small kitchen, or a cooking spot outdoors where there's power, and it's compact enough to put away in a cupboard between uses. Here is what its specs mean and which pans work on it.

How induction heating works

An induction coil under the cooking surface creates a changing magnetic field, and that field heats compatible cookware directly, instead of heating a burner that then passes heat to the pan. In general, this gives fast boiling and quick responses when you turn the heat up or down. The C5-A's coil is 6.8 inches (about 17 cm) across, which AAOBOSI says spreads heat evenly for consistent results.

The catch is cookware. Induction only works with pans that have a magnetic base, such as cast iron, enamelled cast iron and most stainless steel. Plain aluminium, copper and glass won't heat unless they have a magnetic plate in the base. A simple test is whether a fridge magnet sticks firmly to the bottom of the pan. Since the heat comes from the area above the coil, pans with a base close to the coil's size typically heat most evenly.

Power levels and temperature settings

There are two ways to set the heat. Power mode has 20 levels, P1 to P20, which control how much energy goes into the pan. Temperature mode has 20 preset temperatures from 120°F to 465°F (about 49°C to 240°C). AAOBOSI describes the range as covering everything from a gentle simmer to high-heat searing.

On most portable induction cooktops, the temperature sensor sits under the cooking surface, so the setting is a guide to the pan's temperature rather than an exact reading.

Presets and timer

Four presets cover common tasks: Boil, Hot Pot, Stew and Keep Warm. The Hot Pot setting suits tabletop cooking, where a pot of broth simmers in the middle of the table and everyone cooks their own ingredients in it. The timer can be set for up to four hours, which is useful for long stews and keeping food warm.

Everything runs from a touch panel on the top.

Child lock and residual heat indicator

A child safety lock locks the touch controls so the settings can't be changed by an accidental touch. The residual heat indicator shows when the surface is still hot after cooking. The cooktop surface isn't heated directly, but a hot pan warms the surface beneath it, and that heat lingers for a while after the pan is lifted off.

Size, weight and where to use it

It measures about 11.0 x 13.8 x 1.7 inches (28 x 35 x 4.3 cm) and weighs under 5 kg (about 11 lb). AAOBOSI says it runs with low noise. Induction cooktops have a cooling fan, so some fan sound during use is normal, and some pans can hum at higher settings.

At 1800W on a standard 120-volt outlet, it draws about 15 amps, which uses most of a typical household circuit. It's best not to run other high-power appliances on the same circuit at the same time. Follow the manual on placement, ventilation and the power connection, indoors or out.

Who it suits

It suits small kitchens and apartments that need an extra burner, people who like cooking hot pot at the table, and anyone setting up a temporary kitchen. It also works for outdoor cooking where there's a suitable outlet.

What to check before you buy

  • Your cookware: check that a magnet sticks to the base of the pans you plan to use.
  • Pan size: pans with a base close to the 6.8-inch coil typically heat most evenly.
  • Power: check the outlet and circuit where you'll use it, especially outdoors.
  • Space: leave room around it for the cooling fan, as the manual describes.
  • Upkeep: check the manual on cleaning the top and which products to use.
