The WOLFBOX G840H is a dash cam built into a 12-inch rear-view mirror display. It records the road ahead with a 2.5K camera on the mirror and the view behind with a separate 1080p rear camera, and adds driver-assistance alerts, blind spot detection, voice control and GPS. Here is what its features mean in everyday driving.

How a mirror dash cam works

Instead of a small unit on the windscreen or dashboard, a mirror dash cam fits over your existing rear-view mirror, typically held by straps. The front camera sits on the back of the mirror and looks through the windscreen, while the mirror face is an 11.8-inch screen that can show the rear camera's view or work as a regular mirror.

The rear camera mounts at the back of the vehicle, so its cable has to be routed through the cabin. A live rear view on the mirror can be handy when the back window is blocked by passengers, cargo or headrests.

2.5K front and 1080p rear

Dash cam resolutions are quoted in shorthand. 2.5K usually means 2560 x 1440 pixels, a step up from 1080p (1920 x 1080), and the extra detail helps when you need to read signs or plates in recorded footage. The front camera has WDR (wide dynamic range) and the rear camera HDR, both of which balance bright skies and dark shadows in the same frame.

Driver-assistance alerts and blind spot detection

The G840H has a set of advanced driver-assistance (ADAS) alerts: lane departure, forward collision, pedestrian collision, stop-and-go, and forward distance. Using the rear camera, blind spot detection watches the areas behind the vehicle, with lane change assist and rear collision warnings.

Alerts like these are aids that prompt the driver to look again. They don't control the vehicle, and how well they work depends on camera placement, lighting and road markings.

Recording, voice control and the app

Loop recording writes over the oldest footage when the card is full, so recording never stops. A G-sensor locks the current clip when it detects an impact, so it isn't overwritten. Twelve voice commands cover tasks such as locking a video, taking a picture and turning on Wi-Fi, without touching the screen.

GPS is included, which typically adds location and speed data to recordings. Over 5.8GHz Wi-Fi, the WOLFBOX app connects to the mirror so you can download and share footage, for example with an insurer. The 5.8GHz band is generally quicker than 2.4GHz for transferring large video files over short distances.

Parking features

The rear view can show parking guide lines when manoeuvring. Parking monitoring, which keeps watch while the vehicle is switched off, needs a separate hardwire kit. Kits of this kind connect to the vehicle's fuse box for constant power, and many include a low-voltage cut-off so the car battery isn't drained.

Who it suits

It suits drivers who want front and rear recording without a separate unit on the dashboard, and those who like a large live rear view on the mirror. The driver alerts and blind spot detection add extra prompts on busy roads.

What to check before you buy

  • Fit: check that the 12-inch mirror fits over your existing mirror and doesn't clash with sensors behind it.
  • Rear camera cable: plan the route from the mirror to the back of the vehicle.
  • Memory card: a microSD card isn't included; dash cams generally work best with high-endurance cards.
  • Parking monitoring: allow time for fitting the separate hardwire kit, or for a professional install.
  • Local rules: check the rules where you drive on mounting devices and recording.
  • Support: WOLFBOX gives a 12-month guarantee and software updates.
