The WOLFBOX E40 is a wall-mounted Level 2 charger for electric vehicles. It runs on 240 volts and supplies up to 40 amps, which is considerably faster than plugging a car into an ordinary household outlet. It is meant for a garage, carport or driveway where you park overnight.
What Level 2 charging means
Level 1 charging uses a standard 120V outlet and adds range slowly. Level 2 uses 240V, the same kind of supply as an electric dryer or range. WOLFBOX says the E40 charges about seven times faster than Level 1 and adds around 38 miles (about 61 km) of range in one hour. Real figures depend on your vehicle, its onboard charger and the battery's state of charge, so treat that number as a guide.
Connector and compatibility
The E40 has a J1772 connector, the standard plug on most electric vehicles sold in North America. WOLFBOX notes that Tesla vehicles need a separate adapter. Check what your car's charge port expects before you plan the installation.
Plug-in installation with NEMA 14-50
Instead of being wired directly into the panel, the charger connects to a NEMA 14-50R outlet, the four-prong 240V receptacle often used for RVs and ranges. WOLFBOX recommends a circuit breaker rated at 50 amps or more, in line with the usual practice of sizing a circuit above the charger's continuous load.
Installing a new 240V outlet is work for a licensed electrician. Follow local electrical codes and the manual, and have your panel's capacity checked first.
The screen, app and voice control
A 4.3-inch LCD shows the charging rate, elapsed time, voltage and the amount delivered. Through the app over Wi-Fi, WOLFBOX says you can adjust the current, schedule charging sessions and monitor data in real time. Scheduling is handy if your electricity provider has time-of-use periods, since you choose when charging starts. The charger works with Alexa and Google Assistant, several household members can control it, and an RFID card can be used to start a session.
Weather protection and certification
The listing describes a NEMA 4X housing, a classification generally associated with protection against rain and hose-directed water and with corrosion resistance. WOLFBOX states the charger is CSA certified and meets UL 2594, the standard for EV supply equipment. The 25 ft (about 7.6 m) cable gives some freedom when parking, but it is worth measuring the distance from the mounting spot to your car's charge port.
Size and weight
The unit measures about 12.7 x 7.4 x 4.7 inches (32 x 19 x 12 cm) and weighs 13.5 lb (about 6.1 kg), so it needs a firm wall mount.
Who it suits
It suits households with an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle that want faster charging at home, have or can add a suitable 240V supply, and like the idea of scheduling and app monitoring.
What to check before you buy
- Vehicle: confirm it uses a J1772 port, or that you have the right adapter.
- Electrical supply: ask an electrician whether your panel can support a 50A circuit.
- Outlet: you need a NEMA 14-50R, or a plan to install one to local code.
- Cable reach: measure from the mounting spot to the charge port.
- Wi-Fi: check the signal where the charger will hang if you want app control.
- Charging speed: your car's onboard charger may accept less than 40 amps.
