The Autel MaxiCharger Home is a hardwired Level 2 charger for electric vehicles, designed for a garage wall or an outdoor spot at home. It runs on 240V and supports up to 50 amps, which is faster than a standard household outlet. This page explains the specs and what to confirm before planning an installation.
What Level 2 charging means
Level 1 charging uses an ordinary household outlet and adds range slowly. Level 2 uses a 240V circuit, similar to an electric dryer, and is typically several times faster. Autel rates this model at up to 12kW (50A) and says it adds about 37 miles of range per hour of charging. Real speed depends on your vehicle, because the car's onboard charger sets the limit, and many cars accept less than 12kW.
Hardwired installation
This is a hardwired unit rather than a plug-in one, so it connects directly to a dedicated circuit. Autel says it is easy for any electrician to install. A 50A charger typically needs a correctly sized breaker and wiring, and your panel needs spare capacity. Installation should be done by a qualified electrician following local electrical codes and the manual, and permits may be required.
Cable and weather protection
The 25-foot cable is described as flexible, even in cold weather down to -40°C. A long cable gives flexibility in where you park relative to the charger. The unit is CSA certified and has a NEMA Type 4 enclosure, which is a protection class for indoor and outdoor use, covering rain, snow, sleet and hail. Autel lists fire resistance plus over-current, over-voltage and over-temperature protection.
Smart features
The Autel Charge app lets you manage charging, schedule sessions when you are away and charge at off-peak times, which can suit time-of-use electricity plans. The charger has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and Autel lists Ethernet access, with over-the-air firmware updates. You will need a reliable Wi-Fi signal where the charger is mounted to use the remote features.
Size and warranty
The unit measures about 6.4 x 4.8 x 3.6 inches (roughly 16 x 12 x 9 cm). Autel gives a 3-year warranty and says its service team is available around the clock. Autel says it has made automotive diagnostic products since 2004.
Who it suits
It suits owners of plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles with a home garage, driveway or carport who want faster, scheduled charging. It is less suited to renters who cannot install hardwired equipment, or to homes where the electrical panel has no room for a 50A circuit.
What to check before you buy
- Vehicle connector: confirm your vehicle's charging connector matches the charger's plug type.
- Vehicle charging rate: check your car's maximum AC charging rate.
- Electrical capacity: have an electrician check your panel, breaker and wire size.
- Cable reach: measure from the mounting spot to the vehicle's charge port.
- Wi-Fi coverage: check the signal at the location.
- Local rules: ask about permits and any incentive eligibility in your area.
- Mounting: plan the wall space and location.
