The Autel MaxiCharger Home is a hardwired Level 2 charging station for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It runs on 240 volts, supports up to 50 amps, and is controlled through a smartphone app. Autel says it is intended for residential use only.

What Level 2 means

A Level 1 charger plugs into a regular 120 V household outlet and adds range slowly. Level 2 uses 240 V, similar to a dryer or oven circuit. Autel says this can charge up to nine times faster than Level 1. The unit's output can be set from 6 amps up to 50 amps, so you can match the charging speed to your home's electrical capacity and your needs. The actual rate your car accepts is limited by its own onboard charger.

Installation is hardwired

This model is hardwired, meaning it connects directly to a dedicated circuit instead of plugging into a socket. A 50 amp unit usually needs a suitably rated circuit, wiring and breaker. Installation involves mains-voltage electrical work, so follow your local electrical codes and the manual, and have a qualified electrician do or inspect it.

Smart features and the app

The Autel Charge mobile app lets you track, manage and schedule charging. Scheduling is useful for charging during off-peak hours if your electricity plan has them. The unit supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, CAN and RS485 communication, and the OCPP 1.6J protocol, which Autel says allows integration with home energy systems.

Cable and handling

A 25-foot premium cable gives flexibility in where you park, and an in-body holster keeps the connector stored when not in use. The listing gives 19.0 x 9.0 x 10.0 inches and 22.4 lb.

Weather and certification

Autel lists CSA certification, tested to UL safety standards by CSA, a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory. A NEMA 4X protection class is listed for indoor and outdoor use, which covers ingress of water and corrosion resistance, though correct installation still matters. A three-year limited warranty covers the unit.

Who it suits

It suits households with a plug-in vehicle and a garage or driveway with an available 240 V supply, particularly those who want app-based scheduling and a long cable.

What to check before you buy

  • Confirm your vehicle's connector type matches this charger.
  • Have an electrician check your panel capacity and whether a 50 amp circuit is suitable.
  • Check local codes, permit rules and manual instructions for installation.
  • Measure the distance between the mounting point and the vehicle's charge port against the 25-foot cable.
  • Make sure Wi-Fi coverage reaches the charger location if you want app control.
  • Read the warranty terms and the residential-use limitation.
