The Autel MaxiCharger Home (model Maxi US AC W12-H) is a Level 2 electric vehicle charger for use at home. It runs on 240 volts, is hardwired to the electrical supply and offers an adjustable output of up to 50 amps. Autel intends it for residential use only. Here is what the specs mean and what to check before installing a charger like this.

What Level 2 means

A Level 1 charger plugs into an ordinary household outlet and adds range slowly. A Level 2 charger uses a 240-volt circuit, similar to an electric dryer or range, and typically charges several times faster. Autel says this charger can charge any EV or plug-in hybrid up to 9 times faster than a Level 1 outlet charger. Actual speed depends on the vehicle's onboard charger, which sets the maximum power the car accepts.

Adjustable output up to 50 amps

The output can be set up to 50 amps, so you can match it to your home's electrical capacity and your driving needs. A lower setting may suit a panel with limited spare capacity. Autel says this flexibility can help avoid larger electrical upgrades. Charger circuits are normally sized with a safety margin above the charging current, so the circuit, breaker and wiring all need to suit the setting you choose.

Hardwired installation

Hardwired means the unit is connected directly to the circuit rather than plugged into a receptacle. This is a common approach for higher-power chargers and avoids a plug connection. Installation involves mains-voltage wiring, so it should be done by a qualified electrician following local electrical codes and the manual.

App, scheduling and connectivity

The Autel Charge app lets you track, manage and schedule charging. Scheduling is useful if your electricity provider has off-peak periods, because charging can be set to run at those times. The charger has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet options, and Autel says over-the-air firmware updates arrive automatically. An optional RFID card feature can start and stop charging, which Autel says prevents unauthorised use. The listing also states support for OCPP 1.6J, a common communication protocol, and integration with home energy systems.

Cable and weather protection

The charger has a 25-foot (about 7.6 m) cable with a separate holster for the connector. A longer cable helps when the parking spot is not next to the wall. It has a NEMA 4X enclosure designation, which Autel says allows indoor and outdoor use in any climate. In general, NEMA 4X means protection against windblown dust, rain, splashing water and hose-directed water, and it adds corrosion resistance.

Certification and warranty

Autel states the charger has been tested to UL safety standards by CSA, a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory. It carries a 3-year warranty, and Autel lists 24/7 support. Ask your local utility or government about any incentive programmes and whether they require specific certifications.

Who it suits

It suits homeowners with a garage or driveway and a 240-volt circuit who want a smart, app-controlled charger with a long cable, and who are comfortable having it hardwired.

What to check before you buy

  • Electrical capacity: have an electrician confirm your panel and circuit can support the amperage you want.
  • Connector fit: confirm your vehicle's charging port matches the connector type.
  • Location: measure the distance from the mounting spot to the vehicle's charge port against the 25-foot cable.
  • Connectivity: check Wi-Fi signal where it will be mounted, or use Ethernet.
  • Permits: local rules may require a permit and inspection.
  • Residential use: Autel intends this model for home use only.
