The WAVLINK GS450C is a 35-amp smart battery charger and maintainer for vehicles and equipment. It charges lead-acid, lithium and LiFePO4 batteries at several voltages and shows what it is doing on an LCD. It is meant for people who look after more than one kind of battery, such as a car, a boat and a motorcycle.

Four modes, one charger

WAVLINK lists four modes: Charging, Maintain, Desulfation and Force. Charging is the normal multi-stage cycle. Maintain, often called trickle or float charging, keeps a full battery topped up during storage. Desulfation is a pulse mode intended for lead-acid batteries that have sat discharged and developed sulfate build-up on their plates. Force mode is for batteries that the charger would otherwise not detect. Treat it with care and follow the manual, since it bypasses some of the checks a smart charger normally makes.

The brand also lists a battery test, a soft start and fast trickle charging within the multi-stage process.

Which batteries it supports

The listing gives these combinations:

  • Lead-acid: 6V, 12V and 24V
  • Lithium: 12V and 24V
  • LiFePO4: 12V and 24V

Chemistry matters because lithium and LiFePO4 batteries need a different charge profile from lead-acid ones. A charger that offers a dedicated setting for each is generally safer than one with a single profile. Always match the mode to the battery label and the battery maker's guidance.

Protections

WAVLINK lists reverse polarity, over-current, over-voltage and short-circuit protection, backflow prevention, and spark-proof and fireproof design, plus a cooling fan that responds to temperature. These are typical features of a good smart charger, but the standard advice still applies: connect the clamps before switching on, charge in a ventilated space, and follow the manual.

Display and operating range

The LCD shows charging status and parameters, so you can see progress instead of guessing. WAVLINK states an operating temperature range from 4°F to 104°F (-20°C to 40°C), which covers an unheated garage in most winters. The unit measures 4.5 x 7.9 x 2.2 inches (about 11 x 20 x 5.6 cm), so it fits on a shelf or workbench.

Who it suits

It suits households with several vehicles and boats, anyone who stores a motorcycle or golf cart for the winter, and owners moving to lithium batteries who want a charger that handles both types. At 35 amps it is intended for larger batteries, so check the battery's capacity as well.

What to check before you buy

  • Battery type and voltage: confirm that your battery's chemistry and voltage are on the supported list.
  • Capacity: check the amp-hour capacity of your battery against the charger's output.
  • Mains supply: check the input voltage and plug type for your region.
  • Cable length and clamps: confirm they reach from an outlet to the battery in your garage.
  • Environment: keep it dry and ventilated, and within the stated temperature range.
  • Manual: read the procedure for Force and Desulfation modes before using them.
