The DC HOUSE QA1250A-58.4V18A is a battery charger for 48V lithium batteries, such as those in golf carts and trolling motors. It delivers up to 18 amps and is built into a sealed aluminium case with a handle. Here is what its specs mean and what it is designed to charge.
What 48V, 58.4V and 18A mean
A "48V" LiFePO4 pack is made of 16 cells in series, and when full it reaches about 58.4V. The model name, 58.4V 18A, shows that the charger is set up for that full-charge voltage, and 18A is the current it can supply. Multiplying them gives roughly the 900W the brand lists. Charging efficiency is listed as 93% or higher, meaning most input power reaches the battery.
What it is designed to charge
DC HOUSE says it is designed for 48V lithium-ion batteries in golf carts and trolling motors, and that it also applies to sightseeing vehicles, forklifts, logistics trucks, all-terrain vehicles and boats. Check that your battery's chemistry and voltage match before connecting. A charger meant for one chemistry may not suit another.
Charging times
DC HOUSE gives these times for a full charge:
- 30Ah battery: 1.2 hours
- 50Ah battery: 2 hours
- 100Ah battery: 4 hours
A rough check is capacity divided by current: a 100Ah battery at 18A takes about 5.5 hours at a constant current, so the brand's figures are best treated as its own estimates under its test conditions. Real times depend on the battery's state of charge, its management system and the temperature.
Protections
The brand lists six protections, working alongside the battery's own BMS (battery management system) on DC HOUSE batteries:
- Input under-voltage and over-voltage
- Charger overheating
- No-load output
- Output short circuit and reverse connection
- Output over-current and over-voltage
- Automatic cut-off when fully charged
A cooling fan helps remove heat while charging.
Case and protection class
The shell is die-cast aluminium alloy. DC HOUSE gives it an IP65 classification, which in general means dust-tight and protected against water jets, and describes it as drop-resistant. The charger measures about 9.1 x 5.4 x 4.5 inches (about 23 x 14 x 11 cm). It has a handle, a charging indicator, and 1.1 m (3.6 ft) input and output cables, about 2.2 m (7.2 ft) in total.
Who it suits
It suits owners of 48V lithium golf carts, small utility vehicles and boats who need a replacement or spare charger, and fleet operators with several carts.
What to check before you buy
- Battery match: confirm voltage, chemistry (LiFePO4 or other lithium) and the charge voltage your battery maker specifies.
- Connector: check that the output plug fits your battery or adapt it as the manual allows.
- Current limit: make sure 18A is within your battery's maximum charge rate.
- Mains supply: check the input voltage required and your outlet.
- Cable length: about 1.1 m each side may limit where you can place it.
- Safe use: follow the manual and local electrical codes.
