The VEVOR GS280C is a 20-amp smart battery charger and maintainer for cars, motorcycles, boats, lawn mowers and deep-cycle batteries. It handles lead-acid batteries as well as lithium and LiFePO4, and it has an LCD that shows what is happening. VEVOR notes that it is not a jump starter. Here is what its features mean.
Which batteries it charges
According to VEVOR, the charger supports:
- Lead-acid batteries at 6, 12 and 24 V (flooded, AGM, gel and SLA)
- Lithium batteries at 12 and 24 V
- LiFePO4 batteries at 12 and 24 V
Battery chemistry matters because each type needs a different charging profile. Lead-acid, lithium and LiFePO4 batteries charge to different voltages, so a charger should be set to the right one. The maximum charging current is 20 A, and you can adjust the current to suit your battery's specification. A battery maker usually states a recommended charge rate, so check it before choosing a setting.
Four modes
- Charging: the charger detects 6, 12 or 24 V automatically, or you choose manually. It uses a 7-level charging process and switches to trickle charging once the battery is full.
- Maintain: keeps the battery topped up at a lower current, which suits vehicles or equipment left unused for a season.
- Desulfation: uses a pulse function aimed at lead-acid batteries that have developed sulfate build-up.
- Supply: can charge batteries with voltages as low as 1 V.
A deeply discharged battery may not be recoverable, and results vary with its age and condition.
The 3.6-inch LCD
The large screen shows working mode, charging voltage, current and power percentage in real time, per VEVOR. The controls are independent buttons. A display like this lets you confirm that the charger has recognized the battery before you leave it.
Protection features
The listing names over-current, short-circuit, reverse-polarity, overheat and over-voltage protection. It also describes thermal compensation, which adjusts charging current and voltage with temperature. Batteries charge differently in cold and heat, so this can make charging more stable. Always connect and disconnect the clamps in the order the manual gives and charge in a ventilated space.
What is in the box
VEVOR lists battery clamps, two copper wire terminals and a figure-eight power cord about 9.8 ft (3 m) long. The charger measures about 6.5 x 3.8 x 2.2 inches (16.5 x 9.7 x 5.6 cm) and weighs 1.8 lb (0.8 kg), small enough to keep on a shelf or in a vehicle.
Who it suits
It suits owners of several kinds of vehicle or equipment: a car, a motorcycle, a mower and a boat, for example. It is also useful for anyone moving to a lithium or LiFePO4 battery who wants a charger that supports both chemistries.
What to check before you buy
- Battery type and voltage: confirm yours is on the supported list.
- Capacity: a 20 A current suits larger batteries, but a small battery may need a lower setting. Check your battery's maximum charge rate.
- Cord and plug: check the power cord type for your outlet.
- Connections: make sure the clamps or terminals fit your battery posts.
- Lithium battery rules: some lithium packs require their own charger or a battery-management system. Check the battery manual.
- Not a jump starter: it will not start a car on its own.
The short version
