The VEVOR CY5002 is an 8kW diesel air heater that runs from 12V or 24V DC. It is designed to heat vehicles such as cars, RVs, trucks and tractors, as well as garages, cabins and camp sites. It burns diesel to warm air, so it works independently of mains heating.

How a diesel air heater works

A diesel air heater draws fuel from a tank with a small pump and burns it in a sealed combustion chamber. A fan blows room air across the heat exchanger, so the combustion gases stay separate from the air that warms the space and are vented outside through an exhaust. VEVOR lists a cast aluminium body and a ceramic igniter, and a combustion efficiency of 90% or more.

Power and fuel use are listed as 8kW and 0.18-0.35 L/h. VEVOR says it uses about one gallon of diesel per night to keep a large area warm. Actual use depends on the heat setting and conditions.

Power options

The heater accepts 12V or 24V DC, so it can be run from a vehicle battery or an outdoor power station. VEVOR says that two wiring options, an adapter and a DC 12V connection, make it plug-and-play. Check the manual for the right connection and cable gauge for your battery, and make sure your power source can supply the starting current.

Three ways to control it

You can run the heater from a Bluetooth app, a remote control or the display panel. The app lets you adjust the temperature and watch the heater from your smartphone. Having three methods is useful when the unit is in a cab, under a bunk or in a garage corner.

Safety features

VEVOR lists a built-in CO alarm that monitors carbon monoxide and gives alerts or shuts the heater off automatically. It also lists a leak-proof fuel tank cap, a fuel level indicator and overheat protection. These features are described by the brand and don't replace sensible practice.

Any fuel-burning heater needs a correctly installed exhaust that vents outside, and the space needs fresh air. Follow the manual and local codes and regulations, install a separate certified CO alarm in sleeping areas, and never run it in a sealed space.

Noise

VEVOR says the muffler and fuel pump are designed to keep the noise at 75 dB or lower. Pumps on diesel heaters often make a ticking sound, so consider where you will mount it relative to where you sleep.

Size and weight

The unit measures about 19.5 x 17.9 x 10 inches and weighs 18.7 lb (about 8.5 kg), and VEVOR describes it as vertical and portable.

Who it suits

It suits people who want to heat an RV, truck cab, workshop, garage or cabin where mains heating isn't available, and campers using a power station. Anyone planning a permanent installation in a vehicle should read the installation instructions closely and consider professional help.

What to check before you buy

  • Installation: work out where the exhaust, air intake and fuel line will go.
  • Power source: confirm your battery or power station supports 12V or 24V and the heater's draw.
  • Fuel: check the tank capacity and where you will keep the diesel safely.
  • Ventilation: make sure there is fresh air and a safe exhaust route.
  • Local rules: some places have rules for fuel-burning heaters in vehicles and buildings.
  • Altitude and climate: performance changes with altitude, so read the manual.
  • Upkeep: plan for cleaning, fuel filters and parts.
