The VEVOR 8KW diesel heater is a 12V parking heater that burns diesel to warm a vehicle, boat or small building without running the engine. It is aimed at vans, campers, trailers, boats and garages where cold nights are the problem. Here is what its specs mean and what to confirm before fitting one.

How a diesel air heater works

A diesel air heater draws fuel from a tank through a small pump, burns it in a sealed combustion chamber and passes cabin air over a heat exchanger. Combustion gases are vented outside through an exhaust pipe, and the warm air is blown into the space. Because the burn is sealed off from the cabin air, it is typically used in small enclosed spaces where a naked flame would not be suitable. VEVOR describes the heat exchanger as sandblasted aluminium, intended to produce and transfer heat quickly.

What 8kW covers

The heater is rated at 8kW on a 12V supply, and VEVOR lists an applicable range of 215-269 sq ft (20-25 square metres). It says a vehicle or boat cabin can reach a comfortable temperature within 10 minutes. Real results depend on insulation, outside temperature and how much air leaks out, so treat the figure as a guide for sizing.

Controls: app, remote and LCD

There are three ways to control it:

  • Bluetooth app: VEVOR says you can start preheating from up to 98 ft (30 m) away.
  • Remote control: range of about 32 ft (10 m).
  • LCD controller: for setting the heater up at the unit.

The temperature can be set from 46 °F to 96.8 °F (8 °C to 36 °C). Timing, constant temperature control and voice broadcasting are also listed.

Fuel use and run time

VEVOR rates fuel consumption at 0.16-0.62 L/h, or about 1 gallon per night, and the tank holds 10 L (2.6 gal). It says that can provide continuous heat for up to 16 hours. Consumption varies with the output level, so a low setting runs longer than a high one.

Altitude compensation

At altitude, thinner air changes the fuel-to-air balance. The heater has automatic altitude compensation, which VEVOR says suits elevations up to 18,045 ft (5,500 m), adjusting operation without manual changes.

Protection features

The listing mentions an overheating protection that acts at 270 °C (518 °F), plus constant temperature control and a timing function. As with any fuel-burning heater, follow the manual closely: fit the exhaust and fuel lines as it describes, keep the exhaust outlet clear and away from anything that could be damaged, and check local codes for installation in vehicles and boats.

Who it suits

It suits people who camp or live in vans and RVs, trailer owners, boat owners, and anyone who wants a workshop or garage kept above freezing. It is a 12V unit, so you'll need a suitable battery or supply.

What to check before you buy

  • Space size: compare your cabin or room with the 215-269 sq ft range.
  • Installation: where the heater, exhaust and fuel line will go, and whether you're comfortable fitting it or want a professional.
  • Power supply: 12V, with a battery able to handle starting the heater.
  • Fuel: diesel only, and how you'll refill the 10 L tank.
  • Upkeep: cleaning and servicing parts, as the manual describes.
  • Local rules: requirements for fuel-burning heaters in vehicles, boats or buildings.
