The VEVOR 8kW diesel air heater is a self-contained 12V heater for vehicles, RVs, boats and camping. "All in one" means the heater and its 5 litre fuel tank come as one unit instead of needing a separate tank to be mounted and plumbed in. It can be controlled by a phone app, a remote or an LCD panel.

How a diesel air heater works

A small pump feeds diesel into a combustion chamber, where it burns. A heat exchanger transfers the heat to air that a fan blows into the space, while exhaust gases leave through a separate pipe. The cabin air and the combustion air are kept apart. VEVOR describes a sandblasted aluminium heat exchanger and says the heater delivers rapid heat within about ten minutes.

Output, area and fuel use

The heater is rated at 8kW on 12V, with a listed applicable range of 215 to 269 square feet (20 to 25 square metres). VEVOR says the fuel pump is low-noise and uses about 1 gallon per night, with consumption ranging from 0.16 to 0.62 litres per hour. The 5 litre (1.3 gallon) tank is said to provide continuous heat for up to eight hours. These are brand figures, and real fuel use varies with the setting and outside temperature.

Controls

Bluetooth control through a phone app works from up to 98 ft (30 m), and a remote control works up to 32 ft (10 m), plus the LCD. The temperature can be set from 46.4 to 96.8°F (8 to 36°C). VEVOR lists constant temperature control, a timing function, voice broadcasting and preheating.

Altitude compensation

Diesel burns differently as air thins. The automatic altitude compensation adjusts operation up to 18,045 ft (5,500 m), so you don't have to change settings by hand when you drive into the mountains.

Safety features and installation

VEVOR lists overheating protection at 518°F (270°C) or above. The listing calls the unit installation-free, but a combustion heater needs a proper exhaust route to the outside, a secure fuel supply, an air intake and a stable mounting position, so check the manual carefully. Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, so the exhaust must never discharge into the occupied space. Follow the manual and local rules, and consider a carbon monoxide alarm in the space being heated.

Size

The unit is about 15.0 x 5.9 x 16.1 inches. It's described as portable and suited to cars, RVs and ships.

Who it suits

It suits campers, van and RV owners and boat users with a 12V supply who want a dry, fuel-fired heat source that doesn't depend on mains power. It may be a poor fit for large spaces, or anywhere you can't vent the exhaust outside.

What to check before you buy

  • Space size: compare the 20 to 25 square metre range with your vehicle or cabin.
  • Venting: plan the exhaust and air-intake routes and keep them clear of the living space.
  • Power: check that your 12V battery and wiring can support the heater, particularly at start-up.
  • Fuel: it uses diesel; check the manual on the fuel and how to keep it safely.
  • Noise and upkeep: ask what maintenance the manual describes, as these heaters need periodic care.
  • Rules: check local rules on fuel heaters in vehicles and boats.

The short version

  • A 12V, 8kW diesel air heater with a built-in 5 L tank.
  • App (Bluetooth), remote and LCD control; 8 to 36°C setting range.
  • Automatic altitude compensation up to 5,500 m.
  • Overheating protection at 270°C and above; needs correct exhaust venting.
