The VEVOR 5-8KW Diesel Heater (model XMZ-L-D4) is an all-in-one diesel air heater for vehicles and campsites. It burns diesel to warm the air, with a remote control and LCD screen for operation. VEVOR lists it for trucks, vans, RVs, trailers, campers and tractors. Here is what the specs mean.

How a diesel air heater works

A diesel air heater burns a small amount of fuel in a sealed combustion chamber and blows warm air into the space through a duct. The exhaust travels out through a separate pipe, so the combustion gases are not mixed with the cabin air. The heater uses a fuel pump, a glow plug and a fan, and a controller handles the sequence.

Because it burns fuel, the exhaust must always be vented outside. VEVOR recommends professional installation and external exhaust venting. Follow the manual and local codes, and consider a carbon monoxide alarm in any sleeping space.

Power and fuel use

VEVOR gives the power range as 5 to 8 kW with heating efficiency of 90% or better. It says the heater uses about 1 gallon of diesel per night to keep an area of 215 ft² (20 m²) warm. Heat output and fuel use depend on the setting, the insulation of the space and the outside temperature, so treat these as the brand's figures.

Two power options

The heater has two wiring options: a 110V adapter, and a DC 12V T-shaped plug for external wiring. VEVOR's text also mentions 12/24V vehicle batteries and outdoor storage batteries. This lets you use mains power at home or a campsite and battery power in a vehicle. Check the manual to see which supply suits your set-up and what wiring and fuses are needed.

Remote, thermostat and display

A remote with a stated range of 98 ft (30 m) allows you to start the heater ahead of time, for example to warm a vehicle before you get in. The temperature can be set from 46.4 to 96.8 °F (8 to 36 °C), with a built-in thermostat, and the screen shows the heater's status. VEVOR says warming a vehicle helps with frost and fogged windows.

Noise

VEVOR quotes noise of 75 dB or less and mentions a high-quality muffler. That is roughly the level of a busy street or a vacuum cleaner at a distance, so some sound while it runs is to be expected. Listen to the manual's advice on where to position the unit relative to where you sleep.

Operating temperature and protections

The listed working range of the heater and oil pump is -40 °F to 104 °F (-40 °C to 40 °C). VEVOR also lists protections against overheating (at 280 °C or higher), short circuit, overcurrent, overvoltage and reverse connection, and says the product passed safety certification. Check the manual for the details of those certifications.

Who it suits

It suits people who want to heat a van, RV, truck cab, camper or workshop space with a vehicle-style heater, and who are comfortable with an installation that includes fuel, power and exhaust connections.

What to check before you buy

  • Installation: plan the fuel line, exhaust route and ducting, or use a qualified installer.
  • Space: compare your space with the 215 ft² (20 m²) the brand cites.
  • Power: decide whether you will use the 110V adapter or 12V wiring.
  • Fuel and altitude: check the manual for fuel type and any altitude limits.
  • Safety: exhaust must vent outside, and a carbon monoxide alarm is standard advice.
  • Legal: check local rules for installing fuel-burning heaters in vehicles.
  • Size: the listing doesn't give dimensions, so confirm the footprint in the manual.

The short version

  • A portable diesel air heater rated at 5-8 kW, with efficiency of 90% or more as listed.
  • 110V adapter and 12V wiring options.
  • 98 ft (30 m) remote, thermostat from 8 to 36 °C and a display.
  • Noise of 75 dB or less; protections include overheat, short circuit and reverse connection.
  • Professional installation and external venting of the exhaust are recommended.
