The VEVOR 13,500 lb electric winch is a 12V DC recovery winch for trucks, SUVs and off-road vehicles. It carries 80 feet of synthetic rope and comes with wireless and wired remotes. This page explains what the main specs mean and what to check before mounting one.

What 13,500 lb of line pull means

The 13,500 lb figure is the maximum pull the winch is designed to deliver, usually measured on the first layer of rope on the drum. As rope stacks up in layers, pull capacity typically falls. A common rule of thumb is to choose a winch rated at roughly one and a half times your vehicle's loaded weight, because mud, slopes and suction add resistance beyond the weight itself. Check your vehicle's weight and the winch's own manual.

Motor and gearing

VEVOR describes a 12V DC copper motor rated at 6.6 HP and a three-stage planetary gear system with a 195.8:1 ratio. A planetary gearbox multiplies the motor's torque in a compact housing. A high ratio trades speed for pulling force, so heavy pulls are slow and steady. These winches draw large currents from the battery, so keep the engine running and the battery in good condition during a pull.

The synthetic rope

The rope is 3/8 inch thick and 80 feet long, made from 12-strand high-density polyethylene. VEVOR says it is lightweight, resists water, and floats. In general, synthetic rope is lighter and easier to handle than steel cable and doesn't hold as much energy if it fails, but it needs protection from abrasion and heat. The last few wraps are marked in bright red, which VEVOR says helps you see when the rope is almost out. Inspect rope regularly for cuts and fraying.

Aluminium fairlead

The winch includes an aluminium fairlead, the guide at the front that directs the rope onto the drum. Synthetic rope is normally used with a smooth, hawse-style fairlead like this one, because rollers can scuff it.

Remote controls

You get two ways to operate it. The wireless remote works within about 65.6 ft (20 m), and a wired remote is the backup. Keep clear of the line while it is under load and keep the controller where you can see the rope.

Weather sealing and finish

VEVOR gives an IP55 classification, which generally means protection against dust ingress and water jets, though not submersion. The black matte finish is described as improving rust resistance and insulation. Colour-coded power cables are meant to make the wiring easier.

Size

Packed, it measures about 24 x 10 x 14 inches. Check the mounting bolt pattern against your bumper or winch plate.

Who it suits

It suits owners of heavier trucks and SUVs who go off-road, work on farms or trails, or want a recovery tool for hauling loads. A winch is a recovery aid, not a towing device for use on roads.

What to check before you buy

  • Vehicle weight: compare the pull figure with your loaded weight, with a margin.
  • Mounting: make sure your bumper or winch plate is strong enough and matches the bolt pattern.
  • Electrical system: check battery and alternator condition and cable sizes.
  • Accessories: recovery straps, a snatch block, a tree-trunk protector and gloves are usually bought separately.
  • Rope care: note how the manual says to spool and inspect it.
  • Local rules: check any rules on bumper-mounted equipment where you drive.

The short version

  • 12V DC electric winch with a 13,500 lb rated line pull and a 6.6 HP motor.
  • Three-stage planetary gears at 195.8:1.
  • 3/8 inch by 80 ft synthetic rope and aluminium fairlead.
  • Wireless remote (about 20 m) plus wired remote.
  • IP55 sealing; follow the manual for mounting, wiring and safe use.
