The VEVOR 12V electric winch (model Winch_03) is a steel-rope recovery winch rated at 4,500 lb. It is aimed at ATVs, UTVs, mid-size and larger SUVs, trucks, trailers and boats, where a vehicle or load sometimes needs to be pulled out or hauled in. Here is what the numbers mean.

What 4,500 lb means

The 4,500 lb figure is the winch's rated line pull, the most it is designed to pull in a straight line on the first layer of rope. It is not a statement about vehicle weight. Pulling a stuck vehicle involves friction, mud, slopes and the vehicle's own weight, and the force needed can be well above the vehicle's weight. A common rule of thumb is to choose a winch rated at one and a half times the vehicle's loaded weight, so check your vehicle's figures.

Motor and gearing

VEVOR describes a three-stage planetary motor rated at 2.2 HP, with a gear ratio of 128.2:1. Planetary gears share the load across several gear teeth in a compact housing, and a high ratio trades speed for pulling force. The listed line speeds reflect this: about 23.7 ft/min with no load, down to about 6.2 ft/min at full load. That is a slow, steady pull, which is normal for winches.

Rope and fairlead

The rope is steel, 1/4 inch thick and 39 ft long. The last five wraps on the drum are marked in red as a warning that the rope is nearly out, and VEVOR says the markings are visible from a distance. A four-way fairlead is included. A fairlead is a guide at the front that keeps the rope lined up as it enters the drum from different angles. Steel rope can fray, so heavy gloves are standard advice when handling it.

Weather resistance

VEVOR describes the body as IP55 protected. In general, the "5" for solids means dust is limited, and the second "5" means it resists jets of water from any direction. That is not the same as being submerged, so it suits rain and splashes, not deep water crossings.

Control

A wired handheld controller is listed. The cable is long enough for you to stand away from the line and the vehicle while operating the winch, and VEVOR says one person can run it. Stay clear of the rope while it is under tension.

Size and fit

The winch measures about 14.2 x 11.6 x 6.3 inches (roughly 36 x 29 x 16 cm) and weighs 26 lb (about 11.8 kg). It runs on 12V DC, so it connects to a vehicle battery. Mounting normally needs a suitable winch plate or bumper rated for the load.

Who it suits

It suits owners of off-road vehicles, utility vehicles and trailers who want a recovery tool. Follow the manual on installation, wiring, rigging and operating limits.

What to check before you buy

  • Vehicle weight: compare the rated pull with your vehicle's loaded weight.
  • Mounting: confirm that your bumper or winch plate matches the bolt pattern and can take the load.
  • Electrical: check your battery, cable gauge and charging system.
  • Rope length: 39 ft may be short for some uses.
  • Accessories: check what's in the box, and whether you need a strap, shackles or a damper.
  • Controller: confirm the cable length for your vehicle.

The short version

  • A 12V electric winch with a 4,500 lb rated line pull and a 2.2 HP planetary motor.
  • 128.2:1 gear ratio; 23.7 ft/min unloaded and 6.2 ft/min at full load.
  • 1/4 inch by 39 ft steel rope with red end-of-rope markings, plus a four-way fairlead.
  • IP55 body and a wired handheld controller.
  • About 26 lb, for ATVs, UTVs, SUVs, trucks and boats.
