The POLESTAR 13,000 lb electric winch is a 12-volt recovery winch for trucks, SUVs, Jeeps and trailers. It mounts on the front or rear of a vehicle and uses a motor and gearing to pull a rope, which is how a stuck vehicle is typically recovered from mud, snow or sand. Here is what its listed specs mean.
What 13,000 lb of pull means
The pull figure describes the maximum line pull, normally measured on the first layer of rope on the drum. Pulling force drops as more layers wrap, so it is a ceiling and not an everyday load. A common guideline is to choose a winch rated at about one and a half times the vehicle's gross weight. Check your vehicle's weight in its manual, and remember that a stuck vehicle can need more than its weight to free.
Motor and gearing
POLESTAR lists a 12V DC motor rated at 6.0 HP with a three-stage planetary gear train and a gear ratio of 232:1. A planetary gearbox is compact and strong, and a high ratio trades speed for pulling power. POLESTAR says the design delivers faster line speed under load with lower amp draw. A winch pulls heavy current from the battery, so a healthy battery and, in many setups, a running engine matter when using one.
Synthetic rope
The rope is 3/8 inch in diameter and 66 feet (about 20 m) long. Synthetic rope is lighter than steel cable, easier to handle and, as POLESTAR notes, kinder to the hands. It has no sharp wire strands, but it needs protecting from abrasion and heat, so inspect it often. The aluminium hawse fairlead guides it onto the drum.
Weather sealing and corrosion
The winch is IP68 rated for waterproofing, with corrosion-resistant coatings and stainless steel components according to POLESTAR. IP68 describes protection against dust and submersion under conditions set by the manufacturer. It doesn't mean the winch needs no care, so rinse it and dry it after muddy or salty use as the manual describes.
Wired and wireless control
A wireless handheld remote lets the operator stand clear while the winch pulls, and a corded control is available as a backup. Standing well away from the rope and the load is standard winching advice.
Mounting and fit
The mounting bolt pattern is 10 x 4.5 inches (254 x 114.3 mm). Winch hardware is four G8 M10-1.50 x 30 mm bolts, and the fairlead uses two G8 M12-1.75 x 25 mm bolts. POLESTAR advises confirming that the plate fits before purchase. It lists a full set of mounting accessories and instructions.
Who it suits
It suits off-road drivers, people towing trailers on soft ground, and those preparing a recovery kit for a truck or Jeep. A winch only helps with a suitable anchor point, so recovery straps, a snatch block and gloves are normally needed too.
What to check before you buy
- Mounting plate: confirm the 10 x 4.5 inch pattern fits your bumper or winch mount.
- Vehicle weight: match the pull figure to your vehicle.
- Electrics: check battery capacity and cable sizing in the manual.
- Space: the winch measures about 21.0 x 6.2 x 8.4 inches, so check clearance.
- Safety: follow local rules and the manual, and learn safe recovery practice before first use.
- Upkeep: plan to inspect the rope and rinse the unit after dirty use.
The short version
