The Renogy 40A DC-DC charger is a battery-to-battery charger for vehicles with two 12V batteries: the starter battery and a separate house or auxiliary battery. It takes power from the vehicle's charging system while the engine runs and charges the second battery in multiple stages, with settings for lithium, AGM, gel and flooded batteries. Here is what that means for an RV, van or boat.
Why use a DC-DC charger at all
Linking a second battery straight to the starter battery often leaves it undercharged. Long cable runs lose voltage, and many newer vehicles have smart alternators that lower their output once the starter battery is full. Lithium batteries also want a specific charging profile that an alternator alone doesn't provide.
A DC-DC charger sits between the two batteries and produces its own charging voltage, regardless of what the alternator is doing. It typically works through stages, a steady bulk charge first, then a tapering absorption phase and a lower float voltage to keep the battery topped up.
What 40 amps means in practice
The charger delivers up to 40A to the auxiliary battery. As a rough guide, that can put back around 40 amp-hours for each hour of driving while the battery is accepting full current, with charging slowing as it nears full. A 100Ah battery at half charge, for example, needs about 50Ah, so roughly an hour and a half of driving at full output, plus extra time as the charge tapers.
To deliver 40A at charging voltage, the charger draws somewhat more current from the starter side, so the alternator needs spare capacity on top of the vehicle's own needs.
Alternators, ignition wiring and starter battery protection
Renogy says it works with both traditional and smart alternators. For smart alternators, an ignition (IGN) signal wire is required, so the charger knows when the engine is running even if the alternator voltage is low.
Built-in alternator detection means it charges only while the alternator is running, and stops when it isn't. Renogy also says it adjusts its charging mode at vehicle startup to protect the starter battery, which matters if you rely on that battery to get going.
Battery types and lithium activation
A button on the case sets the battery type: lithium (LiFePO4), gel, flooded, AGM, or a user mode with custom parameters. For LiFePO4 batteries, a lithium activation feature can be turned on or off with one touch. Activation features of this kind are generally used to wake a lithium battery whose internal protection has switched it off after a deep discharge.
Installation, protection and monitoring
The case is compact, about 9.3 x 6.0 x 2.4 inches (24 x 15 x 6 cm), and is designed for wall mounting. Renogy spaces the input and output terminals apart to lower the risk of accidental short circuits during wiring. There is also an RS485 communication port.
Electronic protection covers overload, short circuit, over-temperature and over-voltage, and Renogy says the charger manages its output in hot RV and marine environments.
For Bluetooth monitoring, you need Renogy's BT-2 module, which is available separately. With it, you can adjust settings in the DC Home app or through Renogy One Core (also separate) and look back over up to 365 days of charging data.
Who it suits
It suits RV owners, van and overland builders, and boat owners who run a second 12V battery for lights, a fridge or other equipment, and want it to charge while they drive or motor.
What to check before you buy
- Your alternator: check whether it is a smart alternator, and plan for the ignition signal wire if it is.
- Alternator capacity: make sure it can supply the extra current on top of the vehicle's own load.
- Battery type and size: confirm your house battery's chemistry and voltage are covered, and how long it will take to fill at 40A.
- Wiring: follow Renogy's manual for cable sizes and fuses; heavy cables are usual for currents this large.
- Monitoring: the BT-2 module is needed for app control and charging history.
The short version
- A 12V-to-12V on-board charger with up to 40A of multi-stage charging.
- Works with traditional and smart alternators; charges only while the alternator runs.
- Settings for LiFePO4, gel, flooded, AGM and a custom user mode, with switchable lithium activation.
- Overload, short-circuit, over-temperature and over-voltage protection, plus an RS485 port.
- Optional app control and 365 days of charging data with the separate BT-2 module.
