The EUHOMY CFB-50 is a portable compressor refrigerator with 53 quarts (50 litres) of capacity. It runs from a vehicle's 12V or 24V outlet or from household power, so the same unit can go on a road trip, a camping weekend or a boat and then be plugged in at home. It cools and freezes without ice.

Compressor cooling

EUHOMY fits a variable-frequency compressor, the same basic technology as a household fridge. Compressor models typically hold a set temperature in hot weather better than thermoelectric coolers, which only cool to a set amount below the ambient temperature. The listed range is -4°F to 68°F (about -20°C to 20°C), so the unit can work as a freezer or a fridge. EUHOMY lists an ECO mode for saving energy and a MAX mode for faster cooling, plus UL energy certification.

Two zones and storage

The interior has two storage zones, which EUHOMY says helps keep odours apart. A removable divider and two baskets allow you to arrange the space. At 53 quarts, it holds a good amount of food and drinks for a small group over a weekend, though how much depends on the packaging.

Power supplies and battery protection

The package includes both 110/240V AC and 12/24V DC adapters. Running a fridge from a vehicle can drain its starter battery if the engine is off, and EUHOMY includes three levels of battery protection. You can set the input to low, medium or high (L/M/H) to prevent overload or excessive battery drain. In general, higher cut-off settings protect the battery more but may switch the fridge off sooner. Check your vehicle's electrical setup and the manual.

Built to travel

The unit has dual handles and off-road wheels. EUHOMY says it has an anti-shock design and works on slopes up to 30 degrees. The case uses composite insulation and an inner aluminum film to hold temperature. At 34.7 lb (about 15.7 kg) empty and 25.9 x 18.2 x 24.9 inches, it is something to carry with two hands or roll, and it needs a proper space in the vehicle.

Quiet running and controls

A simple LCD panel sets the temperature. EUHOMY rates operation at 40 decibels, roughly the level of a quiet room. Because compressors cycle on and off, you can still expect occasional sound.

Support and what's in the box

EUHOMY offers two years of tech support. The box contains the fridge, the two baskets, a divider and the AC and DC adapters.

Who it suits

It suits campers, overlanders, boat owners, truck drivers and anyone needing extra cold storage at a cabin or event. It is less suited to short trips where a regular cooler will do.

What to check before you buy

  • Space: measure your vehicle's cargo area or boat locker against the dimensions.
  • Power source: confirm your 12V or 24V outlet and wiring can supply the fridge's draw.
  • Battery: consider a separate battery or power station for long stops, and set the protection level that suits your setup.
  • Level ground: follow the manual on how the unit should be positioned and ventilated.
  • Weight: you will need to lift it in and out of the vehicle.
  • Cleaning: check the manual on defrosting and drainage.
