X-Sense SC06 smoke and CO alarm: features, standards and who it suits

The X-Sense SC06 combines a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm in a single round unit. It runs on a built-in lithium battery that X-Sense says powers it for 10 years, and it mounts with screws and a bracket rather than wiring. It is a basic standalone model, so it is worth understanding exactly what it does and doesn't do before choosing it.

Two sensors in one unit

Inside are two separate sensors, one for each job.

  • Photoelectric smoke sensor: a light source and a light sensor sit inside a chamber, angled so they don't normally see each other. When smoke particles enter the chamber, they scatter light onto the sensor, which sets off the alarm.
  • Electrochemical CO sensor: carbon monoxide reacts at an electrode inside the sensor and produces a small electrical current that rises with the amount of CO present. The alarm responds when that reading reaches its set level.

Combining both in one housing means one device on the ceiling or wall instead of two. The housing is made of heat-retardant PC (polycarbonate) material.

What the 10-year built-in battery means

X-Sense says the built-in lithium battery keeps the alarm powered for 10 years. In practice, that means no battery swaps, no late-night low-battery chirps from a fading replaceable battery, and no ladder trips to change them.

Alarms with a built-in, long-life battery are generally replaced as a complete unit rather than re-batteried. The manual explains the service life and what to do when the alarm reaches it.

Status lights and the test button

Indicator lights on the front show the alarm's status at a glance: green for power, yellow for a fault, and red for an alarm. A single button handles both test and silence. Test it as often as the manual directs.

Standards and listings

The SC06 is ETL listed and meets two North American standards:

  • UL 217, the standard for smoke alarms;
  • UL 2034, the standard for carbon monoxide alarms.

The ETL mark comes from Intertek, an independent testing laboratory. "Listed" means the product was tested against the named standards. Requirements differ between countries, provinces and states, so confirm which standards are accepted where you live.

Standalone, not connected

The SC06 works on its own. It does not support wireless interconnection, Wi-Fi or a base station, so when one unit sounds, other alarms in the home won't sound with it, and there is no app or phone notification. For wireless interconnection, X-Sense offers a separate model, the SC06-W.

Mounting is simple: the unit fits on a ceiling or wall with the supplied bracket, screws and anchors, and no wiring is required. A user manual and a warranty card come in the box. The alarm measures about 5.7 x 5.7 x 2.0 inches (roughly 14.5 x 14.5 x 5 cm).

It suits homes that want a combined smoke and CO alarm with no wiring and no app.

What to check before you buy

  • Local codes: some building codes require alarms to be hard-wired or interconnected, especially in new builds and renovations. Check your local requirements and follow them.
  • Placement: the manual explains where to mount the alarm and where to avoid. Follow it together with your local code.
  • Interconnection: if you want all alarms to sound together, this standalone model isn't designed for that; X-Sense offers the SC06-W for wireless linking.
  • Fuel-burning appliances: if your home has a furnace, water heater, fireplace or attached garage, check how many CO alarms your local code calls for, and where.
  • Testing and replacement: read the manual's guidance on regular testing and on replacing the unit at the end of its service life.

The short version

  • A combined smoke and carbon monoxide alarm in one round, standalone unit.
  • Photoelectric smoke sensor and electrochemical CO sensor.
  • Built-in lithium battery that X-Sense says lasts 10 years, with no battery swaps.
  • ETL listed; meets UL 217 and UL 2034.
  • Mounts on a ceiling or wall without wiring; no Wi-Fi or interconnection (the SC06-W adds wireless linking).
