The ARCCAPTAIN LY800J is an auto-darkening welding helmet with a large lens and adjustment knobs designed to be used with gloves on. It is meant for TIG, MIG and arc welding plus grinding, and it keeps the lens clear until the arc starts, so both hands stay free for the work.
Auto-darkening speed and shade range
The lens uses four arc sensors and switches from light to dark in 1/25000 of a second, according to ARCCAPTAIN. A fast switch matters because the arc is extremely bright at the instant it starts. Having four sensors typically helps the lens keep reacting when part of the arc is blocked by the workpiece or torch.
The light state is DIN 4, and the dark state runs from DIN 5-9 up to 9-13. Lower shades suit low-amperage welding and grinding, and higher shades suit heavier work. Both the lens brightness and sensitivity can be adjusted for the environment, which is helpful when you move between bright outdoor light and a shaded workshop.
A large, clear view
The viewing screen measures 3.94 x 3.66 inches (roughly 100 x 93 mm). ARCCAPTAIN lists a 1/1/1/1 optical clarity class, which describes a lens with minimal distortion and consistent quality across its area, and says its true color technology gives a more natural look at the weld. A larger window shows more of the joint and surrounding metal without moving your head.
Knob adjustments you can use with gloves
ARCCAPTAIN highlights an upgraded knob section so the settings can be changed while wearing welding gloves. Small buttons and dials can be hard to operate with thick gloves, so larger knobs save you from taking a glove off or lifting the hood. The inside of the helmet has also been rearranged for a better fit around the head, according to the brand.
Power: solar plus two coin cells
Two solar panels on the front work with two CR2450 lithium batteries at the back. ARCCAPTAIN says this gives a working time of up to several years, though real runtime depends on how often you weld and how well the lens is kept charged by light. The coin cells are replaceable.
Materials and eye protection
The shell is made from PP (polypropylene). ARCCAPTAIN lists an operating temperature range of -5°C to 55°C, a storage range of -20°C to 70°C, tensile strength up to 120 MPa and flexural modulus up to 4000 MPa. In practice, these figures describe a plastic that is stiff yet flexes without cracking.
The helmet includes a 12-in-1 smart filter with automatic DIN 16 ultraviolet and infrared protection. The idea is that UV and IR filtering stays in place whether the lens is clear or dark. As with any welding gear, follow the manual for inspection, lens replacement and correct shade selection.
Who it suits
This model suits home workshops, repair jobs and hobby welders who want a larger window and easy controls. Using gloves to adjust the settings should be handy for anyone who switches between processes during a session.
What to check before you buy
- Shade needs: confirm DIN 5-9 and 9-13 cover your welding amperage and process.
- Head fit: adjust the headgear with any cap or liner you use, and check weight and balance.
- Batteries: it takes two CR2450 cells, so keep spares.
- Operating temperature: the listed range is -5°C to 55°C, so consider that for very cold or hot sites.
- Standards: confirm the markings meet your workplace or local requirements.
- Upkeep: check the manual on cleaning the lens and replacing cover plates.
