The ARCCAPTAIN RL-600LA is a panoramic auto-darkening welding helmet with one main lens and two side lenses. It has an internal settings screen, nine memory slots, a built-in work light and a rechargeable battery. It is more feature-rich than a basic helmet with two knobs.
Panoramic view
The main lens measures 4.6 x 3.2 inches and each side lens 1.3 x 2.5 inches, for a total viewing area of 7.2 x 3.2 inches (about 183 x 81 mm). Side lenses extend your peripheral vision, so you can see your surroundings and the position of your hands without turning the hood. ARCCAPTAIN lists 1/1/1/1 optical clarity on all lenses, which is the class used to describe minimal distortion.
Seven sensors and a fast switch
Seven arc sensors trigger the auto-darkening in 1/30000 of a second, according to ARCCAPTAIN. Additional sensors typically help the lens stay dark when the arc is partly blocked, and a faster switch shortens the time between clear and dark.
Smart auto adjustment
The helmet adjusts shade, sensitivity and delay automatically according to the brightness of the arc. Shade and delay can be fine-tuned within plus or minus 9 levels, while sensitivity is fixed. With smart auto adjustment on, you can choose one of three modes or enable all at once. The delay setting controls how long the lens stays dark after the arc stops, which matters when the metal is still glowing.
Internal screen, memory and gradient control
Settings are viewed and adjusted on a screen inside the helmet, using buttons beside it for shade, sensitivity and delay. You can save up to nine custom settings and recall them for different jobs, so switching from grinding to welding takes a button press instead of re-tuning. Gradient control provides smooth transitions between the light and dark states, which ARCCAPTAIN says helps reduce eye strain.
Outer lenses and work light
There are two thick outer lenses plus an additional blue-light filtering outer lens, for impact and scratch resistance. A built-in LED work light, switched on from a button below the internal screen, illuminates dark workspaces for lining up a joint, cutting or grinding.
Battery
A 500 mAh rechargeable battery is supported by solar assist. ARCCAPTAIN says it charges fully in 2.5 to 3 hours and gives around 16,000 hours of standby. On a full charge, runtime is up to 1,200 hours without the LED light and up to 500 hours with it on. Those are the brand's figures, so actual use will vary.
Who it suits
This helmet suits welders who move between jobs and want saved presets, and those who like a wide field of view or a light built in. Hobbyists and workshop users who value customization may find the menu system useful.
What to check before you buy
- Weight and balance: the listing gives no weight, so check it against your preferences, especially with the wider shell.
- Learning curve: a menu with several modes takes a little time to learn; read the manual.
- Charging: confirm how and where you'll recharge, and what to do if it runs flat.
- Shade range: the listing doesn't give a shade range, so confirm that it covers your process and amperage before purchase.
- Fit: try the headgear with a cap or liner.
- Standards: confirm the markings meet your workplace or local requirements.
