The X-Sense SC01 is a battery-powered combination alarm that detects both smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) in one round unit. It is a basic standalone model: it sounds on its own and does not link to other alarms or an app. For many homes, that simplicity is the point, since there is no wiring to run and nothing to set up beyond mounting it.
Two detectors in one housing
Smoke and CO are different hazards and need different sensors. X-Sense says the SC01 uses a photoelectric sensor for smoke and an electrochemical sensor for CO. Photoelectric smoke sensors typically respond well to slow, smouldering fires and tend to be less prone to nuisance alarms from cooking. Electrochemical CO sensors are the type most commonly used in home CO alarms. A combined unit means one device on the ceiling or wall instead of two.
Certifications
The listing states the SC01 is ETL certified and meets UL 217 (smoke alarms) and UL 2034 (carbon monoxide alarms). These are North American standards, so they are the ones to look for if you are buying for a home in Canada or the United States. As always, follow your local codes and the manual on how many alarms you need and where they go.
A sealed 10-year battery
The SC01 contains a lithium battery that X-Sense says powers it for the whole 10-year life of the unit. It is not hardwired to household power. In practice this means no routine battery swaps and fewer low-battery chirps. It also means the entire alarm is replaced at the end of its life, so it is worth noting the installation date and checking the manual for the replacement schedule.
The alarm and sensitivity
X-Sense lists an 85 dB sounder. Decibels are measured at a set distance, and what matters in a home is whether the sound reaches the bedrooms and wakes sleepers behind closed doors. The brand says its upgraded sensors increase sensitivity for faster response while limiting false alarms.
Installing it
No rewiring is needed. The package includes a mounting bracket, screws and anchor plugs, and the alarm can go on a wall or ceiling. Placement matters for any alarm: follow the manual for distances from kitchens, bathrooms, corners, vents and fuel-burning appliances.
Standalone, not interconnected
X-Sense stresses that the SC01 does not support wireless interconnection, has no Wi-Fi and cannot be used with a base station. If one alarm goes off, the others will not. Households that want every alarm to sound together should look at the brand's interconnected version, which the listing names as the SC01-W. It measures about 5.7 x 5.7 x 2.0 inches.
Who it suits
It suits homes, rentals and secondary spaces that need a straightforward combination alarm without wiring or apps. It is less suited to larger or multi-storey homes where you want every alarm to trigger at once.
What to check before you buy
- Local requirements: confirm what your area's codes require for smoke and CO alarms.
- Interconnection: decide whether you need alarms that sound together.
- Placement: read the manual for where smoke and CO alarms should and should not be mounted.
- Replacement date: note when the 10-year life ends and plan to replace the whole unit.
- Testing: test the alarm regularly as the manual describes.
