The VEVOR SGPC-1500W is a battery backup system for a sump pump. It combines a pure sine wave inverter with a battery charger: when household power drops, it switches to a 12V battery and keeps the pump running. The battery is not included, so you supply your own.

Why a sump pump needs a backup

A sump pump moves groundwater out of a basement pit. Storms that cause heavy rain are often the same events that cut the power, and a pump without power cannot do its job. A battery backup inverter is one common answer: mains power runs the pump normally, and the battery takes over automatically when mains power fails.

Pure sine wave output

VEVOR rates the unit at 1500W of pure sine wave output and says it is built for sump pumps up to 3/4 HP. Pure sine wave matters for motors. Simpler modified-wave inverters create a stepped waveform that can make induction motors run hotter and noisier. A pure sine wave closely matches household mains, so motor-driven equipment generally runs the way it was designed to. The unit has an AC outlet and a USB port.

Pump motors draw extra current for a moment when they start, so it is worth looking at the pump's running and starting figures in its manual and comparing them with the inverter's stated output.

Setup and charging

The listing describes a standard 3-prong plug, so installation means plugging in rather than rewiring. You connect the battery, plug the unit into the wall and plug the pump into the unit.

Charging happens in three stages, Bulk, Absorption and Float. Bulk pushes in most of the charge quickly, Absorption tops it up at a controlled voltage, and Float holds the battery at a maintenance level. This is how many chargers aim to extend battery life. VEVOR lists compatibility with 12V lead-acid, AGM, Gel and LiFePO4 batteries.

Display and protections

An LCD screen and LED indicators show voltage, battery level and working status. VEVOR also lists built-in protection against overcurrent, overvoltage, short circuit, reverse polarity and high temperature, plus a circuit breaker.

The unit weighs 8.4 lb and measures about 14.2 by 8.3 by 3.2 inches, so it is small enough to mount on a shelf or a wall near the pit.

What to check before you buy

  • Pump size: confirm the pump is 3/4 HP or smaller, and check its starting current in the manual.
  • Battery: you need a 12V battery of a compatible type, and its capacity determines how long the pump can run.
  • Space and ventilation: plan a dry, ventilated place for the unit and the battery, away from direct flooding.
  • Plug fit: check that your pump's plug suits the unit's outlet.
  • Upkeep: batteries age. Check and test the system periodically.
  • Codes: follow the manual and local electrical codes for any installation.
