The VEVOR 8880E is a portable magnetic drill press. Instead of being bolted to a bench, it clamps itself to steel with a powerful electromagnet, which lets you drill clean, accurate holes in beams, plates and structures where a bench drill could never reach. It comes with six annular cutters.

How a magnetic drill works

A mag drill has a magnetic base that grips ferrous steel once switched on. The drill motor rides on a guide rail above it, and a feed handle lowers the cutter into the work. Because the base holds the tool in place, the cutter stays square to the surface, which is difficult to achieve with a handheld drill.

VEVOR lists 2,922 lbf (13,000 N) of holding force, with a high-purity iron core for stable operation at various angles. Holding force depends on the material being thick and flat enough. VEVOR notes the tool is for steel plate of at least 0.39 inches (10 mm) and isn't suitable for stainless steel or cast iron, since the magnet needs a suitable magnetic surface. For inverted or horizontal drilling, VEVOR says to use a security rope.

Annular cutters instead of twist bits

Rather than cutting away a whole circle of metal, an annular cutter is a hollow tube with teeth that cuts only the outer ring and leaves a solid slug. It typically needs less power and gives a cleaner edge than a large twist drill. The 8880E has a maximum coring diameter of 2 inches (50 mm) and a maximum coring depth of 2 inches (50 mm).

Motor and speed

A 1450W copper motor turns the cutter at 0 to 750 RPM, with ten speed settings. Slower speeds usually suit larger cutters and tougher material, while smaller holes go faster. VEVOR lists overload protection and a rapid cooling system to help prevent overheating.

Guide rail, scale and handles

The guide rail is a titanium-magnesium alloy, which VEVOR says gives good wear resistance. A built-in scale in millimetres helps you measure how far the cutter has travelled. Ergonomic handles and three extended cranks are included for the feed.

Size and weight

The drill measures about 11.0 x 7.1 x 14.2 inches and weighs 26.5 lb. It is portable by the standards of a steel-fabrication tool, though 26.5 lb is something to carry carefully on a site, especially up a ladder.

Who it suits

VEVOR lists applications from home improvement and equipment installation to steel fabrication, shipbuilding, bridges, railways and power plants. In practice, it suits workshops and jobsites that regularly drill holes in structural steel such as I-beams. For occasional holes in thin sheet or other metals, a conventional drill may be a better fit.

What to check before you buy

  • Material: confirm the steel is at least 0.39 inches (10 mm) thick, flat and clean. It's not for stainless steel or cast iron.
  • Hole size: check the 2-inch maximum diameter and depth against your jobs.
  • Power supply: confirm your outlet and any extension cord suit a 1450W tool.
  • Position: for overhead or horizontal work, follow the manual and use the recommended rope.
  • Cutters and spares: annular cutters wear, so check which sizes are included and what fits.
  • Protective gear: eye and hearing protection and sensible clothing around metal chips are standard practice. Follow the manual.

The short version

  • A portable magnetic drill press with a 1450W copper motor and 0-750 RPM across ten speeds.
  • 2,922 lbf (13,000 N) of holding force on steel at least 0.39 inches thick.
  • Maximum coring diameter and depth of 2 inches, with six annular cutters.
  • Built-in millimetre scale, overload protection and rapid cooling.
  • About 26.5 lb; not suitable for stainless steel or cast iron.
