VEVOR 1550W Magnetic Drill Press: electromagnet, speeds and uses

The VEVOR 1550W magnetic drill press is a portable drill that clamps itself to steel with an electromagnet. Instead of carrying the work to a drill press, you bring the drill to the work, which helps when you are drilling large holes in beams, plates or frames that are too heavy or too fixed to move.

How a magnetic base works

An electromagnet in the base holds the drill firmly to a ferrous surface when it is switched on. VEVOR rates this magnet at 2922 lbf (13,000 N). The grip is what stops the drill moving or twisting as the cutter bites, and drilling at the right angle is far easier than with a handheld drill.

Because the hold depends on the magnet, it works only on steel or iron. Thin, rusty, painted or uneven surfaces typically weaken the grip, and the thicker and flatter the steel, the better the hold. Check the manual for the minimum material thickness.

Motor, speed and capacity

The listing describes a 1550W copper motor. The drill runs at 500 RPM with a 10-speed selection, and the brand says it bores up to 2 in (about 50 mm) in diameter and 2 in deep. The speed settings let you match speed to the hole size: in general, larger cutters run slower and smaller ones faster, and the cutter maker's guidance should set your choice.

Guide rail and depth scale

The frame carries a scale to help you judge drilling depth. VEVOR says the guide rail is made from a titanium magnesium alloy intended to resist corrosion and wear. A good rail keeps the cutter moving true as you feed it down, which matters when the hole needs to be accurate.

Coolant system

A coolant bottle with a quick push-fit tube connection is included. Cutting fluid reduces heat at the cutter and, as the brand says, helps the cutter last longer and cut more smoothly. Drilling steel without coolant typically wears cutters fast.

Size and weight

The drill measures 12.6 x 5.5 x 16.9 in (320 x 140 x 430 mm) and weighs 39 lb (about 17.7 kg). That is light enough to carry to a job site or move around a workshop, though you will want to have it supported when you lift it.

Power supply

The listing gives the voltage as 120V 60Hz for the US and 220-240V 50/60Hz for Europe and Australia. Check that you have the matching version and a suitable circuit.

Who it suits

The brand lists home improvement, equipment installation, steel and railway manufacturing, and building construction as uses. Fabricators, maintenance crews and serious home workshops that drill large holes in steel are the likeliest buyers. For occasional small holes, a standard drill is usually enough.

What to check before you buy

  • Material: confirm your steel is thick and clean enough for a secure magnetic hold.
  • Cutters: check what cutter type and shank the drill accepts, and whether any are included.
  • Hole size: compare your largest hole with the 2 in capacity.
  • Voltage: pick the version for your mains supply.
  • Safety: follow the manual, wear eye protection, keep hair and sleeves clear, and secure the drill (for example, with a safety strap) on vertical or overhead work if the manual advises it.
  • Upkeep: coolant, cutter replacement and keeping the magnet face clean.
