The VEVOR 43cc Gas Post Hole Digger is a one-person petrol auger for drilling holes for fence posts, deck footings, trees and other planting. A 43cc engine drives an 8-inch alloy steel auger, so digging a hole takes much less effort than a manual post hole digger.

What 43cc and 1250W mean

The 43cc figure is the engine's displacement, the combined volume of its cylinder. VEVOR lists the output as 1250W (about 1.7 horsepower) and a top engine speed of 9,350 RPM. The auger itself turns much slower, at 320 RPM, because a gearbox reduces speed and increases torque. VEVOR says the gearbox has ball-bearing shafts and alloy gears for hard soil.

Fuel and starting

This is a two-stroke engine, so it runs on a pre-mixed fuel of oil and petrol. VEVOR gives the ratio as 1:25 and includes an oil mixing bottle to help. The fuel tank holds 1.2 litres, which the brand says is enough to dig several holes between refills. A pull cord of 47.2 inches (1.2 m), longer than usual, is meant to make starting easier, and the listing says the engine is EPA-certified.

The auger

The bit is 8 inches in diameter (about 200 mm) and 30 inches long (800 mm) and is made of powder-coated alloy steel. The length lets you drill a deep hole without bending over. VEVOR says the unit handles sand, forest soil and farmland, but rocks, roots and heavy clay will always be hard on any auger.

Handling and controls

The handle is welded steel with a shock-absorbing foam grip. An emergency stop switch on the handle shuts the engine off quickly. Augers can kick or twist hard if the bit snags, so a firm stance and, where the manual suggests it, a second person help.

What's in the box

The set includes an 8-inch auger, a spare spark plug, an oil mixing bottle and a tool kit. The unit measures about 21.7 x 11.8 x 43.8 inches (55 x 30 x 111 cm).

Who it suits

It suits homeowners and small farms building fences, installing a deck or planting. Larger jobs involving dozens of holes in rocky ground may call for heavier equipment.

What to check before you buy

  • Hole size: an 8-inch bit suits many fence posts; confirm the diameter and depth your project needs.
  • Soil conditions: rocks, roots and frozen ground can stall or damage an auger.
  • Fuel mix: use the right oil and ratio as the manual states.
  • Protective gear: use hearing protection, eye protection, gloves and sturdy boots.
  • Local checks: call before you dig to find buried utility lines.
  • Noise and emissions: petrol engines are loud, and some areas limit use hours.
