This VEVOR utility pump is a small, portable electric pump for moving water from one place to another. It is rated at 1/10 HP, 360 gallons per hour and a 46 ft lift. Typical jobs include draining a pool cover, emptying an aquarium or clearing a flooded area.

What GPH and lift mean

GPH is gallons per hour, the volume the pump moves at its best point. VEVOR rates this one at 360 GPH, about 1,360 litres an hour. The 46 ft high-lift figure is the maximum height, about 14 m, to which it can push water. In general, flow falls as the water has to go higher or through longer hoses, so real-world output is usually below the headline figure.

Build and stability

The pump body is aluminium alloy, which VEVOR says is wear-resistant, lightweight and finished with an electrostatic spray coating to resist stains and corrosion. The flat base gives more contact with the ground, which VEVOR says keeps it from slipping or tipping and cuts noise somewhat. It weighs 5 lb (about 2.3 kg), measures 6.4 x 4.1 x 5.4 inches and has a carry handle.

What's in the box

  • 6 ft suction hose
  • Water suction strainer
  • Spare impeller
  • Two carbon brushes

The impeller and brushes are wear parts, so having spares is useful. The strainer helps keep larger debris out of the pump.

Using it correctly

This is a surface pump: it sits outside the water and pulls through the hose. It is not submersible. The brand's instructions say to:

  • fill the inlet with water to submerge the impeller before first use;
  • keep large particles out of the water source;
  • never run it dry, and switch it off when the water level falls to about 1/8 inch.

Short-term use and noise

VEVOR says the pump is designed for short-term work and recommends no more than two hours per session. Its series-excited motor runs at high speed and is loud, and the brand advises ear protection.

Who it suits

Home owners and DIY users who need an occasional pump for draining, transferring or watering. Heavier, continuous or sewage-style tasks call for a different type of pump.

What to check before you buy

  • Flow and lift: compare the listed figures with your hose length and height.
  • Water quality: clean water suits it best.
  • Hose fittings: check whether your existing hoses match the connection.
  • Power: 115V supply, with outdoor-rated cords and a GFCI outlet near water as the manual advises.
  • Duty cycle: plan around the two-hour limit.
  • Noise: keep ear protection handy.
