The VEVOR 0.5HP Deep Well Submersible Pump is a 4-inch pump designed to sit underwater and push water up from a well, reservoir or other source. VEVOR lists it for industrial, irrigation and home use, wherever water has to be lifted from some depth.

Flow, head and power

Two numbers describe what a pump can do. Flow is how much water it moves: VEVOR rates this pump at up to 28 gallons per minute (GPM). Head is how high it can lift water: up to 167 ft. These maximums do not occur together; as the lift increases, flow drops, so check the pump's performance curve in the manual for the depth you need.

The power is listed as 1.3HP input and 0.5HP output on 230V, 60Hz. Input is the electricity the motor draws, output is the mechanical power at the pump. The pump has five thermoplastic impeller stages, and each stage adds pressure, which is how a small pump reaches a high head.

Construction

The frame, outlet and connecting parts are stainless steel, which VEVOR says resists rust and corrosion during long submersion. It carries an ETL certification and an IP68 waterproof grade, meaning it is designed for continuous immersion. VEVOR says it can be used for 8 to 10 years; actual life depends on water quality, how it is installed and how it is run. The discharge is 1-1/4 inch NPT.

Motor and protection

The motor uses copper windings and a high-precision rotor. It has built-in overheat protection, which stops the pump if it jams or runs abnormally. VEVOR warns that the pump must not run without water or at a low water level, as running dry can damage it.

Check valve and filter

A check valve is built in to prevent water flowing back down the pipe, though VEVOR recommends adding a second one. The stainless steel mesh at the inlet filters impurities. For a newly drilled well that may contain a lot of sand, VEVOR suggests placing a layer of gauze in front of the inlet.

Size and fit

The pump is 4 inches in diameter and about 32.3 inches long, and it weighs 21 lb (about 9.5 kg). The well casing must be at least 10 mm (0.39 inch) wider than the pump. A 33 ft power cord is included.

Who it suits

It suits owners of drilled wells, farm and garden irrigation, and people drawing water from reservoirs, canals or rivers, where the water level sits within the pump's head.

What to check before you buy

  • Well depth and water level: compare them with the head, and leave margin for friction in the pipe.
  • Casing size: it should be at least 10 mm wider than the pump.
  • Power: it needs a 230V supply and suitable wiring and breaker, installed to local codes.
  • Controls: you may need a pressure tank, controller or switch.
  • Water quality: sand and sediment affect wear.
  • Installation: read the manual, and use a qualified electrician if you are unsure.
  • Cord length: 33 ft may be too short for deep installations.

The short version

  • A 4-inch stainless steel submersible well pump, 0.5HP output on 230V/60Hz.
  • Rated up to 28 GPM and 167 ft head, with five impeller stages.
  • IP68, ETL certified, with overheat protection and a built-in check valve.
  • Comes with a 33 ft cord and a 1-1/4 inch NPT outlet.
