The VEVOR 30L Sonic Cleaner is a large ultrasonic cleaning tank with a heater, a timer and two power levels. Instead of scrubbing, it cleans with sound waves in liquid, which suits parts with threads, crevices and small holes that a brush can't reach. Here is what its specs mean in practice.

How ultrasonic cleaning works

Transducers bonded under the tank vibrate many thousands of times a second. The pressure waves this creates in the liquid form tiny bubbles that collapse almost instantly, a process called cavitation. Those collapses happen on every wetted surface, including the inside of holes and the gaps between links, which is why ultrasonic cleaners are popular for intricate parts.

This model works at 40 kHz with 600 W of ultrasonic power, and VEVOR's images show ten transducers under the tank. 40 kHz is a common general-purpose frequency: lower frequencies typically give stronger, coarser cleaning, and higher ones a finer, gentler action.

What a 30-litre tank holds

Thirty litres is a little under 8 US gallons, which puts this machine at the large end for home and workshop use. According to VEVOR's images, the basket takes items up to about 16.9 x 9.1 x 5.5 inches (43 x 23 x 14 cm), enough for longer tools, car parts or several smaller items at once.

A full tank is heavy: 30 litres of water alone weighs around 30 kg (66 lb). Plan to fill and drain it where it will be used rather than carrying it full.

Heat, power levels and degassing

The built-in heater warms the liquid anywhere up to 80°C (176°F). Warm liquid generally loosens grease and oil faster than cold, and VEVOR suggests rough ranges in its images: about 30-40°C for watches and electronics, 40-50°C for jewellery, and 60-80°C for heavily oiled industrial parts.

There are two power settings. Half mode is meant for jewellery and delicate electronics, and full mode for greasy industrial parts.

The degassing mode addresses a less obvious problem. Fresh liquid contains dissolved air, and that air cushions the collapsing bubbles, which weakens the cleaning. Degassing drives the air out first, and VEVOR says this improves cleaning inside holes and crevices.

Build and handling

The tank and the included basket are 304 stainless steel, a common grade that resists corrosion and wear. The basket keeps items off the floor of the tank, which helps prevent scratches during cleaning. There are handles on the sides and a drain valve with a drain hose, so the tank doesn't need to be tipped to empty it. A digital control panel on the front handles the timer and the heater.

Who it suits

The large tank suits mechanics and workshops cleaning car parts, bolts and tools, labs cleaning glassware and instruments, and home users with jewellery, watch bands and eyeglasses. For only a few rings or a pair of glasses, a tank this size is more than most people need.

What to check before you buy

  • Bench space: check the footprint and allow room next to a sink or drain for emptying.
  • Cleaning liquid: use a solution made for ultrasonic cleaners and suited to the material; flammable solvents should never go in a heated tank. Follow the manual.
  • Delicate items: some materials, such as pearls, soft gemstones and some coatings, aren't suited to ultrasonic cleaning; check with the item's maker.
  • Item size: compare your largest parts with the basket's 43 x 23 x 14 cm.
  • Water level: most ultrasonic cleaners must not run without enough liquid in the tank; follow the fill marks.

The short version

  • A 30-litre ultrasonic cleaner working at 40 kHz with 600 W.
  • A heater up to 80°C (176°F) and a timer.
