The VEVOR 15L ultrasonic cleaner is a benchtop tank that cleans small parts with high-frequency sound waves in a heated liquid. It is meant for workshops, labs and hobbyists who clean tools, circuit boards, jewellery and other small items that are hard to scrub by hand.

How ultrasonic cleaning works

Transducers on the tank produce sound waves above human hearing. These create countless tiny bubbles in the liquid, which collapse against surfaces in a process called cavitation. The collapsing bubbles dislodge grease, dust and residue, including from crevices a brush can't reach. Heating the liquid usually makes the cleaning more effective, and detergent made for ultrasonic use is typically added to the water.

Frequency and power

VEVOR gives a frequency of 40kHz, which it calls the most suitable choice. In general, lower frequencies give stronger cavitation for tougher dirt, and higher ones are gentler on delicate items. 40kHz is a common general-purpose middle ground.

The unit has 6 transducers of 60W each, for 360W of ultrasonic power, in a sandwich piezoelectric structure. A separate 400W heater warms the liquid.

Tank and basket

The tank is 304 stainless steel, a grade widely used where corrosion resistance matters. Inside dimensions are 13 x 11.8 x 5.9 in, which VEVOR rates at 15 litres, and the maximum workpiece size is 10.6 x 8.7 x 4.1 in. A matching basket holds small items such as coins, rings, watches and parts, so they don't rest directly on the tank bottom. The outer dimensions of the machine are 17 x 15 x 13 in.

Note the tank is shallow, at 5.9 in. Long items won't stand upright, and the liquid level must cover the parts, as the manual describes.

Digital timer and temperature

The control panel has a digital display. VEVOR lists a timer of 0–30 minutes and a temperature of 0–80°C (176°F). Set the temperature to suit the item and the cleaning agent. Many cleaning jobs run for a few minutes, and the timer stops the cycle automatically.

What it can clean

VEVOR lists glasses, watches, circuit boards, dental equipment, tableware, jewellery and small mechanical parts, including wrenches and screwdrivers. Not everything tolerates ultrasonic cleaning. Soft stones, some porous materials, glued assemblies and delicate coatings can be damaged, so check the item maker's guidance first. The listing also states FCC, CE, RoHS and UL certification.

Who it suits

It suits repair shops, small manufacturers, hobbyists and anyone who regularly cleans metal or electronic parts. A smaller unit may do for occasional jewellery cleaning, as 15 litres takes up desk space and needs a fair amount of liquid.

What to check before you buy

  • Item size: compare your largest parts with the 10.6 x 8.7 x 4.1 in maximum.
  • Power: the listing is for 110V. Check your supply.
  • Cleaning liquid: check the manual for which liquids are suitable. Never use flammable solvents in the tank.
  • Surface: it needs a stable bench with a drain or a way of emptying 15 litres.
  • Noise: ultrasonic units often make a high-pitched sound, so think about where it sits.
  • Rinsing and drying: parts usually need rinsing afterwards.
