The Tilswall Alien500 is a handheld electric paint sprayer using HVLP (high volume, low pressure) technology. It is aimed at DIY painting of furniture, fences, decks, cabinets and walls, and it comes with a set of nozzles and three spray patterns so it can be adjusted to the job.

What HVLP means

HVLP sprayers push a large volume of air at low pressure to atomise paint into a fine mist. In general, low pressure means less overspray bouncing off the surface than with high-pressure systems, so more of the paint lands on the work. It also tends to give a smoother finish than a brush or roller on flat surfaces, if the paint is thinned correctly.

Viscosity and paint types

Tilswall says the sprayer handles paint up to 100 DIN-s. DIN-s is a measure of how long paint takes to flow through a standard cup, so a higher number means thicker paint. The brand says it suits oil-based, water-based and other paints. Tilswall also advises thinning paint before use for a more even finish, and the paint maker's can will usually say how much thinner to add.

Nozzles and spray patterns

Four nozzles are included. The listing's nozzle sizes run from 1.0mm to 2mm, with several 1.5mm entries, so check the exact set in the box. In general, small nozzles suit thin liquids and detail work, while larger ones suit thicker paint.

Three spray shapes are available: horizontal, vertical and elliptical. Switching pattern lets you spray a vertical fence board or a wide tabletop without turning the gun.

Flow control

A knob adjusts how much paint is released. Less flow suits small, detailed pieces and reduces runs; more flow covers large areas quickly.

Weight and handling

The sprayer weighs about 0.7 kg (1.54 lb) by Tilswall's figure, with an ergonomic handle. Light tools are easier to hold for longer sessions. The brand also says it needs no tools to assemble.

Cleaning

Tilswall stresses cleaning the sprayer thoroughly after each use, so no paint dries inside. Dried paint is a common reason sprayers clog.

Who it suits

It suits first-time sprayer users and home painters with furniture, fences and cabinets. Large interior jobs may need masking and sheeting.

What to check before you buy

  • Paint type: check the manual for which coatings are supported and how to thin them.
  • Nozzle set: confirm the nozzle sizes in the box match your paint.
  • Capacity: check the cup size against the size of your project.
  • Preparation: plan masking and a well-ventilated space, and wear a suitable mask and eye protection.
  • Cleaning: allow time to clean after every session.
