The Tilswall 800W HVLP paint sprayer is an electric spray gun for furniture, cabinets, fences, walls and crafts. Its motor sits in a separate unit connected to the handheld gun by a hose, and the paint is held in a 1300ml detachable container. Here is what the specs mean and what to think about before starting a project.

What HVLP means

HVLP stands for high volume, low pressure. These sprayers move a lot of air at low pressure to atomise paint, which typically gives finer control and less overspray than high-pressure sprayers, and is often chosen for furniture and trim. Tilswall lists an 800W motor and says it supports a smooth, even finish.

The split design

The handheld gun separates from the motor unit. Tilswall says this reduces hand fatigue and makes the gun easier to manoeuvre, since you are not holding the motor's weight. The gun connects through an 8.2 ft (about 2.5 m) hose, and the power cable is 9.8 ft (about 3 m). A 4.5 ft shoulder strap is also included. Check that the combined reach suits your work area, as you may need an extension cord that is rated for the load.

Container and flow control

The detachable container holds 1300ml, so you can paint for longer between refills. An adjustment knob controls flow from 0 to 1100ml per minute, which lets you lower the flow for detailed work and raise it for large surfaces. Tilswall also lists a strainer so paint passes through a filter before reaching the nozzle, helping to prevent clogs.

Three nozzles and three spray patterns

Three plastic nozzles come in the box: 1.0 mm, 1.8 mm and 2.6 mm. In general, a larger nozzle suits thicker coatings. Tilswall says the 1.8 mm nozzle suits thin products such as sealers and varnish, and the 2.6 mm nozzle suits thicker paints such as latex and chalk-type paints. The listing gives a maximum viscosity of 120 din/sec.

Three spray patterns are available: vertical, horizontal and circular. A vertical fan helps on wide horizontal passes, a horizontal fan suits tall surfaces, and a circular pattern is useful for small objects and corners.

Cleaning

Tilswall describes cleaning as simple because of the split base design. A cleaning brush, a cleaning needle and spare seals are included. As with any sprayer, cleaning promptly after use, following the manual, helps keep the nozzle from clogging.

What's in the box

  • 800W spray machine and 1300ml container
  • Three nozzles (1.0 mm, 1.8 mm, 2.6 mm)
  • Cleaning brush and cleaning needle
  • Three seals and a cover
  • Measuring cup
  • 9.8 ft cable, 8.2 ft hose and 4.5 ft shoulder strap

Who it suits

It suits home projects with large or awkward surfaces, such as fences, sheds, decks, cabinets and furniture, where a brush or roller would be slow. It is less suited to anyone wanting a heavy-duty professional rig for continuous work.

What to check before you buy

  • Your coating: check the paint's viscosity, and whether it needs thinning for the nozzle you plan to use.
  • Masking: spraying needs thorough masking of nearby surfaces and good ventilation.
  • Safety: follow the manual and the paint maker's advice on protective equipment.
  • Power and reach: check the cable and hose length against your work area.
  • Practice: try patterns and flow on scrap material first.
