The DEWENWILS HSLT05H is a 300W low voltage transformer for landscape lighting with a photocell and a timer built in. It steps household 120V AC down to a lower voltage for path, spot, step and patio lights, and it decides when those lights come on, so you do not need to add separate controls.
What it does
A landscape transformer is the power supply for a low voltage lighting system. DEWENWILS says this one converts 120V AC to 12V or 15V AC, and describes it as a safety voltage. It is listed as suitable for landscape lights, spotlights, step lights, outdoor lights, patio lights and garden lights, among other low voltage fixtures. Check that your fixtures are designed for AC low voltage at the tap you choose.
Dusk to dawn photocell
The built-in photocell reads ambient light. The lights turn on automatically at dusk and off at dawn. A photocell is useful because the lights then follow the seasons, coming on earlier in winter and later in summer, with no resetting. Place the unit where the sensor is not lit by porch lights or the landscape lights themselves, or it may behave oddly.
Timer and the five modes
You press MENU to cycle through five modes:
- Manual ON/OFF
- Auto ON/OFF (the dusk-to-dawn behaviour)
- Photo ON, Timer OFF (on at dusk, off after a set time)
- Timer ON/OFF
- Test
Test mode lets you check that the light sensor works, which is handy when setting up in daylight. The brand says the choice of modes helps match different setups and can improve energy efficiency, for instance by switching lights off in the small hours.
Memory and protection
If power is cut, the transformer does not need a manual reset. DEWENWILS says it retains the mode you chose before the outage. It also has built-in circuit protection: a failure or overload cuts the output automatically to protect the lights.
As with any transformer, keep the total wattage of the connected lights comfortably below the 300W capacity. A common guideline is to stay around 80% of capacity, and other DEWENWILS models state exactly that.
Casing
The casing is stainless steel, which the brand says is waterproof and corrosion-resistant for harsh weather. The listing gives dimensions of 4.4 x 4.9 x 9.0 inches and a weight of 12.4 lb (about 5.6 kg). The weight is mainly the transformer core, so mount it securely.
Who it suits
It suits homeowners who want a plug-in, set-and-forget controller for a garden lighting run, and who prefer a built-in sensor and timer to adding separate accessories.
What to check before you buy
- Fixture voltage: check your lights work on 12V or 15V AC.
- Total wattage: add up every fixture and stay below 300W, leaving headroom.
- Sensor position: make sure the photocell can see natural light and not your own lighting.
- Cable and layout: long cable runs lose voltage, so follow the fixture maker's guidance.
- Outlet and mounting: you need a suitable outlet nearby and a firm place to fix a 12 lb unit.
- Codes and manual: follow local electrical codes and the manual for outdoor wiring.
