The DEWENWILS HOSL04 is a 200W low voltage transformer for outdoor lighting. It converts household 120V AC to 12V AC and switches your landscape lights using a built-in dusk-to-dawn sensor or a countdown timer, so path and garden lights run without anyone flipping a switch.

Stepping down to 12V

Most landscape lighting is designed for a low voltage supply. The transformer takes mains power from an outlet and delivers 12V AC to the cable that runs out to the fixtures. DEWENWILS describes this as a safer, more practical level of electrical current for garden use. The 200W figure is the total the unit can supply, and the brand advises that the total power of the landscape lighting should not exceed 80% of the power pack's capacity. For this model that is about 160W of fixtures.

Built-in dusk-to-dawn sensor

A photocell is attached, so the lights come on automatically at dusk and go off at dawn. Because the sensor follows daylight, the schedule adjusts through the year without manual changes. Position the sensor so that it sees natural light rather than your own fixtures.

Countdown timer

The countdown mode lets the transformer turn on at dusk and switch off automatically 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 hours later. This is useful if you want lights for the evening but not all night.

Three modes, two buttons

Operation is simple. You press the ▲ and ▼ buttons to step through Always On, Auto and Countdown Timing in turn. With only three modes and two buttons, it is easier to set up than programmable controllers, though it offers less flexibility than a full scheduler.

Memory function

The transformer keeps the mode you selected even after a power outage, so you do not need to adjust it again. The listing adds a condition: it needs to run in the chosen mode for at least 24 hours before the memory function works.

Installation and build

The unit has built-in hanging holes and a 3.3 ft STJW 18AWG power cord, so it can be mounted directly on an outdoor wall. It is made of what the brand calls a high-performance metal material, said to resist corrosion and severe weather, and measures 4.0 x 6.0 x 8.6 inches. The short cord means you need an outlet within about a metre of where you mount it.

Who it suits

It suits small to medium garden lighting layouts, such as a few path lights, step lights or spotlights, where a 200W supply is enough and a simple automatic schedule is all that is needed.

What to check before you buy

  • Total wattage: add up every fixture and keep below about 80% of 200W.
  • Fixture voltage: confirm your lights run on 12V AC.
  • Outlet position: the power cord is 3.3 ft, so plan the mounting spot around it.
  • Sensor placement: keep the photocell away from artificial light.
  • Memory function: allow 24 hours in a mode for it to take effect.
  • Codes and manual: follow local electrical codes and the manual for outdoor wiring.
