DEWENWILS 300W Pool Light Transformer (HOSL05C): features, specs and uses
A 300W metal low-voltage transformer that steps 120V AC down to 12, 13 or 14V AC for pool, spa, fountain and landscape lights. What the specs mean and what to check.

The DEWENWILS HOSL05C is a 300W low-voltage transformer in a metal case. It converts household 120V AC into 12V, 13V or 14V AC, the range that low-voltage pool, spa, fountain and landscape lights are designed to run on. It is the power supply that sits between your outlet and a run of low-voltage fixtures.
What a low-voltage transformer does
Low-voltage lighting systems don't plug straight into the wall. A transformer reduces mains voltage to a lower level, and the fixtures connect to that lower-voltage side. DEWENWILS says this one changes 120V to 12V, 13V or 14V and is built to work with low-voltage lights, including submersible fixtures used in pools and spas.
The multi-tap design means there are several output voltages to choose from. Taps are typically used to compensate for voltage drop on longer cable runs: the farther the lights are from the transformer, the more voltage is lost along the wire, so a higher tap can help distant fixtures stay bright. The manual explains which terminal to use.
Understanding the 300W figure
The 300W figure is the total load the transformer can supply. DEWENWILS notes that the combined power of the connected lights should stay within 80% of that capacity, which works out to about 240W. Add up the wattage of every fixture on the circuit, not just the first few. Many LED fixtures draw only a few watts each, so the 80% limit often allows many more lights than older halogen ones would.
Built-in circuit breaker
The transformer has an automatic circuit breaker that DEWENWILS says protects against overloads and short circuits. A breaker trips when the load is too high or a fault occurs, which is useful if a cable is damaged or a fixture fails. After a trip, the cause should be found and fixed before resetting.
Casing, compartments and knockouts
The housing is metal with a sealed design, which the brand says holds up in tough weather. Inside, the high-voltage and low-voltage wiring are in separate compartments, which keeps the two sets of wires apart and tidy. There are ten knockouts of about 1.06 inches (27 mm) for threading wires through. Two holders keep the unit away from the wall, which DEWENWILS says helps with heat dissipation.
It measures about 4.1 x 5.0 x 7.0 inches (10 x 13 x 18 cm) and weighs 11.5 lb (about 5.2 kg). The weight comes from the transformer core, and it is a reminder to mount it on a solid surface.
Where it can be used
DEWENWILS lists indoor and outdoor use, such as in a garage controlling lights, or connected to pool lights, fountain lights, spas, submersible fixtures and outdoor landscape or decorative lighting. Wiring a pool or spa is regulated work in most places, so follow local electrical codes and the manual, and use a licensed electrician where required.
Who it suits
It suits owners with a low-voltage pool, spa, pond or landscape lighting system who need a replacement or a new power supply, particularly where several circuits may be added over time.
What to check before you buy
- Fixture voltage: confirm your lights are designed for 12V, 13V or 14V AC, not DC.
- Total wattage: add up all fixtures and keep the total within 80% of 300W.
- Cable runs: long runs lose voltage, so check which tap suits your layout.
- Mounting: the unit weighs 11.5 lb, so plan a sturdy surface with room for airflow.
- Rules: pool and spa wiring is covered by local codes; check them and the manual.
The short version
- A 300W metal transformer, model HOSL05C, converting 120V AC to 12V, 13V or 14V AC.
- Multi-tap design for adding or removing circuits.
- Automatic circuit breaker for overload and short-circuit protection.
- Ten knockouts, separate high- and low-voltage compartments, sealed metal build.
- Keep connected lights within 80% of the rated capacity.
