The YOWHICK DP03-L is a portable smart projector with native 1080p resolution, built-in Netflix and dual-band Wi-Fi 6. It throws a picture from 40 to 400 inches across, so it can stand in for a TV in a bedroom, a living room or a backyard. Here is what its specifications mean, including the "4K" in its description.

Native 1080p and what 4K support means

A projector's native resolution is the number of pixels its imaging chip actually shows. For the DP03-L that is 1920 x 1080, or full HD. "4K support" means it accepts 4K video and scales it down to its native 1080p, so you can play 4K sources without an error, but the picture itself is full HD.

It is also HDCP 2.2 compliant. HDCP is the copy-protection standard that many streaming devices, game consoles and 4K sources use, and a display that doesn't support the right version may show a blank screen instead of the picture.

Netflix without a streaming stick

Netflix and other streaming apps open from the projector's home screen, and the remote has shortcut buttons for some of them. That means no separate streaming stick or box is needed for everyday viewing. YOWHICK says it releases regular firmware updates for new features and app stability.

Picture size, distance and setup

The image ranges from 40 to 400 inches diagonally, from 3.6 to 29 feet (about 1.1 to 8.8 m) away; the further back the projector sits, the larger the picture. Plus or minus 15 degrees of vertical keystone correction squares up the image when the projector is tilted up or down, and 50-100% zoom shrinks the picture without moving the projector. Like most digital adjustments, keystone and zoom work by using fewer of the chip's pixels, so the sharpest picture comes from placing the projector square to the wall at the distance you need.

YOWHICK doesn't give a brightness figure in lumens. Most home projectors look their best in a dark or dim room, and daylight tends to wash the picture out, so evenings and closed curtains suit it best.

Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 and ports

Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 handles streaming, and the projector works with iOS, Android and Windows devices. Bluetooth 5.3 works in both directions: it can send sound to a Bluetooth speaker or soundbar, or the projector can act as a Bluetooth speaker for music from your phone.

For wired connections there are HDMI, USB, AV, TF (microSD) and 3.5 mm headphone ports, enough for a laptop, a game console, a streaming stick or a USB drive. A 5W HiFi speaker is built in. That suits a small room; a larger room or an outdoor screen usually benefits from an external speaker.

Placement and support

The projector can sit on a table, stand on a tripod or be mounted on a ceiling. A sleep timer turns it off after a set time, which helps if you fall asleep during a film. YOWHICK includes a 2-year warranty and lifetime technical support.

Who it suits

It suits people who want a big picture for films, sports and games in a bedroom or living room, renters who would rather not mount a large TV, and anyone planning occasional outdoor movie nights.

What to check before you buy

  • Room light: with no brightness figure given, plan to watch in a dark or dim room.
  • Distance: measure from where the projector will sit to the wall to see what picture size you'll get.
  • Surface: a smooth, light-coloured wall or a projector screen gives the most even picture.
  • Sound: consider an external speaker for larger rooms or outdoor use.
  • Apps: confirm the streaming services you use are available on its home screen.
