The WAVLINK U41F is an external enclosure that turns an M.2 NVMe SSD into a portable drive. You supply the SSD, slide it in without tools and connect it over USB4 or Thunderbolt. It is meant for people who want fast external storage for large files, such as video, photos and game libraries.

What 40Gbps USB4 means

USB4 is a connection standard that supports up to 40Gbps and uses the USB-C connector. WAVLINK rates the enclosure at 40Gbps and says that, with a properly configured computer and a qualified SSD, read and write speeds reach up to 3800MB/s (figure from WAVLINK Labs). Real speeds depend on the SSD, the computer's port and the cable. A port that is only USB 3.x, for example, will connect but run slower. The listing says the enclosure is compatible with Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 and USB4 hosts.

Which SSDs fit

It takes PCIe NVMe SSDs with M key or B+M key connectors in the 2280 size, including double-sided drives. WAVLINK states a capacity of up to 8TB. It does not support AHCI or SATA M.2 SSDs, which is an important point: many M.2 drives are SATA, and those won't work here. The SSD is not included.

Cooling

The body is full aluminium alloy with perforations on both sides. A built-in fan, a thermal silicone pad and an aluminium strip move heat from the SSD to the case. High-speed NVMe drives typically slow down when they get hot, so cooling matters during long transfers.

The controller chip and features

The enclosure uses an ASM2464PD controller. WAVLINK says it supports:

  • UASP, a protocol that reduces overhead and delay in data transfers;
  • Trim, which helps an SSD maintain its speed over time;
  • S.M.A.R.T., which lets software report the drive's status.

Size and setup

The enclosure measures 4.7 x 2 x 0.7 inches and weighs 142g, so it fits in a pocket or laptop bag. Installation is tool-free, and the product is plug and play with no drivers needed. WAVLINK lists compatibility with Windows, macOS and Linux.

Who it suits

It suits creators, photographers and gamers who need to move large files or run projects from an external drive, and anyone who wants to reuse a spare NVMe drive.

What to check before you buy

  • Your SSD: confirm it is PCIe NVMe, 2280 size, not SATA or AHCI.
  • Your port: check whether your computer has USB4 or Thunderbolt for full speed.
  • Cable: use a cable rated for 40Gbps.
  • Heat and noise: a fan adds some sound under load.
  • Capacity: the listing supports up to 8TB.
  • What's in the box: check the supplied cable, because the SSD is sold separately.

The short version

  • An external M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure with a USB4 40Gbps connection.
  • Rated by WAVLINK for up to 3800MB/s with a suitable computer and SSD.
  • Takes 2280 M-key and B+M key NVMe drives up to 8TB; no SATA or AHCI support.
  • Aluminium body with a built-in fan, plus UASP, Trim and S.M.A.R.T. support.
  • 142g, tool-free and plug and play on Windows, macOS and Linux.
