The ASUS TUF Gaming A2 is an empty portable enclosure: you add your own M.2 SSD and it becomes an external drive. It is aimed at gamers who want to carry or expand a game library on a PC, laptop, handheld or console, and at anyone with a spare M.2 drive to put to use. Here is what its main specs mean.
What an enclosure does
An SSD enclosure holds a bare M.2 drive, connects it to a USB port and, in this case, protects it. It is a good way to reuse a drive taken from an older laptop, or to choose the capacity and speed you want rather than buying a pre-built external drive. The enclosure does not include the SSD, so you supply that.
Dual M.2 support: NVMe and SATA
The TUF Gaming A2 accepts both M.2 NVMe (PCIe) and M.2 SATA drives, in 2242, 2260 and 2280 lengths. The numbers are width and length in millimetres, so 2280 is 22 mm by 80 mm, the most common size. Supporting both protocols widens the choice, though a SATA drive is limited by its own interface, which is much slower than NVMe.
USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 and what 20 Gbps means
The enclosure connects over USB-C using USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, rated at up to 20 Gbps. ASUS says that is twice as fast as the TUF Gaming A1. Gen 2x2 uses two 10 Gbps lanes at once, so you only get the full 20 Gbps if the port on your computer also supports Gen 2x2. On a plain 10 Gbps USB-C port the enclosure will usually still work, at the lower speed. Real speeds also depend on the SSD you install and on sustained write behaviour.
ASUS cites a transfer of a full game to a console such as the ROG Ally in about 90 seconds, with the note that this is a best-case figure from the brand.
Toughness: MIL-STD-810H and IP68
The listing says the enclosure was subjected to U.S. MIL-STD-810H and IP68 testing, and it has a protective silicone-rubber exterior. MIL-STD-810H is a set of US military environmental test methods; a product claiming it is typically tested for things like drops and vibration. IP68 means dust-tight and protected against continuous immersion in water under conditions set by the manufacturer. Those protection levels apply to the sealed enclosure, so follow the manual on closing it properly, and remember that protection can degrade with wear.
Installing a drive without screws
A Q-Latch mechanism lets you swap drives without a screwdriver. You open the latch, slide the SSD in, and close it. That suits people who swap drives often.
Heat management
The chassis is aluminium alloy, and a thermal pad sits against the SSD to move heat into the body. ASUS says this helps prevent speed drops and extend SSD life. NVMe drives can throttle when they get hot during long transfers, so a metal case with a pad is a sensible design, though results depend on the drive.
Compatibility
ASUS lists compatibility with Windows 11, macOS, mobile devices and current game consoles. Console support for external storage varies by model and system software, so check your console's own documentation.
Who it suits
It suits gamers who want extra storage for a console, handheld or laptop, people who edit or carry large files, and anyone repurposing an M.2 drive.
What to check before you buy
- The drive: you need your own M.2 SSD, in 2242, 2260 or 2280 length.
- Port speed: to reach 20 Gbps, your device needs a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port.
- Console rules: check what your console allows for external storage.
- Cable: use the cable that comes with it, or one rated for the speed.
- Heat: fast NVMe drives still warm up, so avoid covering the enclosure during long transfers.
The short version
- An empty portable enclosure for M.2 NVMe and SATA SSDs, in 2242, 2260 and 2280 sizes.
- USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x2, up to 20 Gbps with a matching port.
- Tested to MIL-STD-810H and IP68 per the listing, with a silicone-rubber exterior.
- Screw-free Q-Latch installation, aluminium chassis and a thermal pad.
- SSD not included.
