The WAVLINK 4-bay enclosure holds up to four SATA hard drives or SSDs and connects them to a computer over one USB-C cable. It also works as a small dock, with an extra USB-C port and an HDMI output. It is meant for people who have outgrown a single external drive and want to keep a large collection in one place. Here is what the specifications mean.
Four bays and how much storage
The enclosure has four SATA 6Gbit/s bays that take 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives. WAVLINK lists a maximum of 4 x 32TB, for a total of 128TB. That figure depends on drives of that size existing and working with your system. For 2.5-inch drives, the listing says extra 2.5-to-3.5-inch mounting brackets are needed, and they are not included.
What 10Gbps USB-C means
The host connection is a USB 3.2 Type-C port rated at up to 10Gbps. Four mechanical hard drives will rarely saturate this link at once, since a single hard drive typically reads at a couple of hundred megabytes per second. SSDs can come closer to the limit. The link is shared by all the drives, so simultaneous transfers divide the available speed.
The dock features
Beyond storage, there is a second USB-C port for peripherals or daisy-chaining devices, and an HDMI output that supports up to 4K at 60Hz (under DP 1.4). WAVLINK adds an important note: the host computer's USB-C port must support video output, and you should use the USB-C to USB-C cable, or the HDMI port will not work.
Cooling and build
The shell is aluminium, which helps carry heat away from the drives. Two built-in fans start automatically at 48°C. Spinning drives generate steady heat, so cooling matters when the enclosure is working for hours, for example during backups or large copies.
Independent power switches
Each bay has its own on/off switch. WAVLINK describes the bays as hot-swappable, so a drive can be swapped without powering down the whole unit. As a general habit, eject the drive in your operating system first, switch its bay off, and only then pull it.
Size
The listing gives its dimensions as 7.2 x 5.0 x 6.4 inches and its weight as 2.4 lb (without drives). It is compact enough for a desk shelf.
Who it suits
It suits photographers, video editors and home users who keep archives, media libraries or backup sets. It also fits anyone reusing old internal drives.
What to check before you buy
- Drive type: the bays are SATA. NVMe or M.2 drives won't fit.
- 2.5-inch drives: plan on extra brackets, which the listing says are needed and not included.
- Video output: check that your computer's USB-C port supports display output before relying on the HDMI.
- Redundancy: this is plain drive access, with no RAID mentioned in the listing, so important data still needs a separate backup.
- Noise and space: hard drives and fans make sound, and four drives need airflow.
- Support terms: WAVLINK states a 12-month warranty.
The short version
- Four SATA bays for 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives, up to 4 x 32TB.
- 10Gbps USB-C host connection, plus a second USB-C port.
- HDMI output up to 4K at 60Hz when the host port supports video.
- Aluminium shell with two fans that start at 48°C.
- Individual power switches for each bay.
