The WAVLINK AC1200 (model WN588HA2) is a weatherproof Wi-Fi extender and access point built to be mounted outdoors. It is meant for places an indoor router can't reach well, such as a courtyard, a yard, a workshop or a dock. It takes power and data over a single network cable, so it can sit where there is no nearby outlet.

What AC1200 dual-band means

AC1200 is shorthand for the combined speed of two bands. WAVLINK lists up to 300Mbps on 2.4GHz and 867Mbps on 5GHz, and the device follows the 802.11ac/a/n/g/b standards, which is the generation usually called Wi-Fi 5. In general, 2.4GHz travels farther and passes through walls better, while 5GHz is faster over shorter distances. These are maximum link rates, and real-world throughput is typically lower.

WAVLINK also lists MU-MIMO and beamforming. MU-MIMO lets an access point talk to several devices at once, and beamforming aims the signal toward the devices that need it. Both are meant to keep coverage steadier when many devices are connected.

Antennas and range

The unit has four detachable 7dBi omnidirectional antennas, built-in PA+LNA amplification and up to 1000mW of transmit power. WAVLINK says it can extend the signal of an existing router or access point up to 300 metres. That figure is the brand's, and it assumes a clear line of sight. Walls, trees, metal and weather typically shorten range noticeably. Omnidirectional antennas spread signal in a circle around the unit, so a central mounting position tends to work best.

Built for the outdoors

The casing is rated IP67, which means it is sealed against dust and temporary immersion in water. The listing adds a grounding terminal, 15kV ESD protection and 6kV lightning protection, plus an operating range of -20°C to 50°C. It mounts on a wall or a pole. For any outdoor electrical equipment, follow the installation manual and local codes on grounding and cabling.

Power over Ethernet

The extender is powered through PoE and supports both 802.3at active PoE and passive PoE. One cable carries power and data together, so you don't need a separate outlet at the mounting spot. You will need a PoE injector or a PoE switch at the other end, and you should check which PoE type yours provides.

Operating modes

According to WAVLINK, the unit works in access point, repeater or router mode, and it can connect to most wireless signals, including Starlink. A mesh mode lets it share a single network name and password with a compatible router for roaming around the property, and pairing is done with a one-touch button. For larger sites it also works with the WAVLINK AC controller for managing several units together.

Who it suits

It suits people covering a backyard, a campsite, a boat dock or an outbuilding, and small sites that need an outdoor access point. The listing mentions a courtyard and a fish finder as examples. It is less relevant if you only need to fix a weak spot inside a house.

What to check before you buy

  • Your source signal: an extender can only repeat what it receives, so mount it where the existing signal is still reasonably strong.
  • PoE power: confirm whether you have an 802.3at injector, a PoE switch or a passive PoE supply.
  • Cabling: use outdoor-rated network cable and seal the connections as the manual describes.
  • Mounting: decide between wall and pole mounting, and think about height and clear line of sight.
  • Compatibility: if you want mesh mode, check that your router supports it.
  • Speed expectations: Wi-Fi 5 speeds are shared among all connected devices.
