The ASUS RP-BE58 is a dual-band WiFi 7 (802.11be) range extender. It picks up the signal from your existing router and repeats it, so rooms where the wireless signal is weak get better coverage. It is compact, at about 2.8 x 3.4 x 5.9 inches (7 x 8.6 x 15 cm) and 0.5 lb (about 230 g). Here is what its main features mean.
What BE3600 and WiFi 7 mean
BE3600 is a class label that adds up the maximum rates of the two bands. ASUS says the extender boosts speeds up to 3600 Mbps. Real-world speeds are lower and depend on distance, walls, interference and the devices you connect. WiFi 7 is the latest generation of the standard, and ASUS says it is aimed at uses such as 8K streaming, HDR gaming, content creation and cloud computing.
ASUS also lists 4096-QAM, a denser way of packing data into the signal, which it says increases a single band's transmission speed by 1.2 times. Gains like this typically need a nearby, strong signal and WiFi 7 devices to show up.
Multi-Link Operation
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) lets a compatible device use more than one band at the same time. ASUS says this helps keep connections stable and transfers efficient. MLO only helps when both ends support it, so older phones and laptops will still connect but won't benefit from this feature.
Works with your router
ASUS says the RP-BE58 is compatible with virtually all WiFi routers, modems and cable routers. A WiFi 7 router will give the best pairing in principle, but the extender works as a repeater for other routers. How much speed you keep depends on the signal it receives from the router, so placement matters.
AiMesh support
AiMesh is ASUS's system for joining compatible ASUS devices into one mesh, with a single network name and roaming between nodes. ASUS says the RP-BE58 supports AiMesh, so it can extend a mesh built from compatible ASUS routers. Check ASUS's AiMesh compatibility list for your router model.
Setup and coverage
Setup is done in the ASUS Router app or the ASUS Extender app. ASUS says it takes just a few taps. The brand states coverage of up to 2,200 sq ft (about 204 square metres). As with all coverage figures, treat it as a best-case number for open layouts; thick walls and floors reduce it.
Who it suits
It suits homes with a dead spot or weak upstairs or basement signal where adding a wired access point isn't practical. It also suits people who already run an ASUS AiMesh network and want to add a node.
What to check before you buy
- Router: confirm your router supports the bands and standards you want, and check AiMesh compatibility if you use ASUS gear.
- Placement: put the extender about halfway between the router and the weak area, where it still gets a good signal.
- Devices: WiFi 7 benefits need WiFi 7 phones, laptops or adapters.
- Power: it plugs into a wall outlet, so check you have a free socket in the right spot.
- Wired alternative: if you can run an Ethernet cable, a wired access point can give steadier speeds.
- Updates: check the manual for firmware update steps.
