The WAVLINK 40Gbps Dual M.2 enclosure is an external housing for two NVMe SSDs. It does two jobs: it turns bare M.2 drives into fast portable storage, and it can copy one drive to another without a computer doing the work. This page covers what its specs mean and what to check first.

What 40Gbps means for an SSD

The enclosure connects over USB4 at 40Gbps. WAVLINK rates it at up to 3300MB/s read and 3000MB/s write. Real speeds depend on the SSD, the cable and the host port. The enclosure is described as working with Thunderbolt 5, 4 and 3 hosts, and it falls back to USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 ports at lower speeds. For comparison, typical SATA-based external drives top out far lower, so an NVMe drive in a fast enclosure is noticeably quicker for large files such as video footage.

Which SSDs fit

The two slots accept NVMe SSDs with M-key or B+M-key connectors, in 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 lengths, up to 8TB per drive. Those lengths cover most drives sold for laptops, handheld consoles and desktops. The tool-free design means no screwdriver for fitting drives. The listing says it works with Windows, macOS, Android and iOS systems, and mentions devices such as MacBooks and iPad Pro.

Offline cloning

The standout feature is one-click offline cloning. With a source SSD in one slot and a target in the other, the enclosure can copy the data between them without connecting to a computer. This suits upgrading to a larger drive or duplicating a drive's contents. WAVLINK gives two warnings that are worth taking seriously:

  • The target SSD needs to be the same capacity as the source or larger.
  • The target drive is formatted during the clone, so everything on it is erased. Back up important files first.

It's sensible to keep the original drive untouched until you've checked that the clone boots or opens correctly.

Cooling and build

Fast NVMe drives get warm and can slow themselves down when they overheat. The enclosure combines an aluminium alloy housing, heat vents and an active cooling fan, which WAVLINK says keeps the drive stable under heavy workloads. A fan does add some noise, so consider where you'll use it.

Size and portability

The listing gives its dimensions as 1.6 x 5.0 x 1.7 inches and a weight of 176g, small enough for a laptop bag or camera kit.

Who it suits

It suits photographers and video editors who move large files between machines, people upgrading a laptop or handheld SSD, and anyone who wants a quick way to duplicate a drive.

What to check before you buy

  • Drive type: confirm your SSD is NVMe (M-key or B+M-key), not SATA M.2.
  • Port: a USB4 or Thunderbolt port is needed for the full 40Gbps.
  • Cable: use a cable rated for the speed you expect.
  • Capacity: for cloning, the target must be at least as large as the source.
  • Backups: keep a copy of important data before any clone.
  • Noise and power: check how the fan behaves and whether your host port supplies enough power for two drives.

The short version

  • Dual-slot USB4 enclosure for NVMe M.2 SSDs up to 8TB each.
  • Rated for up to 3300MB/s read and 3000MB/s write.
  • One-click offline cloning; the target drive is erased.
  • Aluminium housing with an active fan.
  • About 176g, palm-sized.
