The Ubiquiti UniFi Express (model UX-US) is a very small device that does two jobs: it works as a UniFi cloud gateway, and it includes a WiFi 6 access point. Ubiquiti says it can run an entire small network on its own, or act as an access point that meshes into a larger UniFi setup.
Gateway and access point in one
A gateway sits between your internet connection and your network, handling routing and connecting devices to the internet. An access point provides the wireless signal. The UniFi Express does both, running the UniFi Network application. It measures roughly 3.9 x 3.9 x 1.2 inches and weighs about 0.7 lb, so it is much smaller than a typical router.
Ports and wireless
The listing gives these hardware details:
- One Gigabit Ethernet (RJ45) WAN port for the internet connection
- One Gigabit Ethernet (RJ45) LAN port to extend the network, for example to a switch
- Built-in WiFi 6 access point
- A 0.96-inch LCM status display
With only one LAN port, wired devices usually need a small switch behind it. A gigabit connection is typical for home and small office broadband, though the port speed isn't the same as your actual internet speed.
Coverage and device count
Ubiquiti lists single-unit coverage of 140 m² (1,500 ft²) and 50+ connected WiFi devices. Both are manufacturer figures, and real coverage depends on walls, building materials and interference. Treat 1,500 ft² as a guide to a small home or office, not a promise for every layout.
Managing it
The unit is managed with UniFi Network version 8.0.7 or later. UniFi equipment is controlled from one application, rather than each device having its own separate settings page. Used as a gateway, the Express can manage up to four additional UniFi Network devices, so it can grow into a modest setup with extra access points or switches. When used as an access point, it meshes with an existing UniFi system.
Who it suits
It suits small homes, apartments and small offices that want the UniFi management approach in a compact package. It is also a way for someone already using UniFi gear to add a small access point. Larger buildings or networks with many wired devices will typically need more hardware.
What to check before you buy
- Internet connection: confirm your modem or ONT has an Ethernet output that suits the single WAN port.
- Wired devices: count them; one LAN port means you'll likely need a switch.
- Coverage: compare the 140 m² figure with your floor plan and construction.
- Software: confirm you can run UniFi Network 8.0.7 or later.
- Region: the UX-US model name points to a US version, so check regional suitability, including power and WiFi rules.
- Existing equipment: if you already use UniFi devices, check how the Express would join them.
