The TP-Link TL-SM5310-T is a small transceiver module that plugs into an SFP+ slot and gives it a standard RJ45 copper Ethernet port. It lets a switch, router or media converter with a 10G SFP+ interface connect to ordinary twisted-pair network cable, at speeds up to 10Gbps. It is a component rather than a standalone device, so it only works in equipment that has a free SFP+ port.
What an SFP+ copper module does
SFP+ slots are common on 10G network equipment and are designed to take interchangeable modules, which may be fibre optic or copper. This module is the copper kind: it converts the SFP+ interface to 10GBase-T over RJ45. That is useful when a switch has only SFP+ ports but the device you want to connect, such as a server, NAS or workstation, has a copper 10G network card.
Speeds and cable distances
TP-Link rates the module for 10Gbps over distances of up to 30 metres on UTP Cat 6a cable or better. At lower speeds (2.5G, 1G and 100Mbps) the rated distance is 100 metres on Cat 5e or better. Cable quality matters at 10G. Older Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable may not hold the full speed at length, so using Cat 6a is the safe approach. The module is described as supporting the speeds in between as well, which helps when you are connecting a mix of older and newer devices.
Plug and play, hot pluggable
TP-Link says there is no software to install and no configuration or technician needed. The module is hot pluggable, which means you can insert or remove it without shutting down the switch, so the rest of your network stays up. As with any hot-swap component, check your equipment's manual for specific advice.
Compatibility
TP-Link says the module is compatible with most fibre switches, media converters, routers and other fibre optic equipment with 10G SFP+ ports. "Most" is the key word. Some vendors lock their ports to approved modules, and 10GBase-T modules typically draw more power and run warmer than fibre ones, which can limit how many you can use side by side in one device. The listing does not name specific compatible models, so check your equipment's documentation.
Build
The casing is metal, which TP-Link says keeps the connection stable in a wide range of environments. Metal also helps carry away heat. The module measures about 2.6 x 0.6 x 0.6 inches (6.6 x 1.5 x 1.5 cm) and weighs about 0.1 lb.
Who it suits
It suits home labs, small offices and server rooms where a switch has SFP+ ports but you need to reach copper-connected devices, and anyone upgrading part of a network to 10G without replacing the existing cabling.
What to check before you buy
- Port type: confirm the port is SFP+ (10G), not only SFP (1G).
- Vendor restrictions: check whether your equipment accepts third-party modules.
- Cabling: use Cat 6a or better for 10G, and keep runs within 30 metres.
- Other end of the link: the device you connect needs a 10GBase-T port, or a slower speed that the module supports.
- Heat and spacing: leave airflow around the module, especially if you fill neighbouring ports.
- Quantity: each link needs its own module only where an SFP+ port is involved.
The short version
- A 10GBase-T RJ45 copper SFP+ transceiver, model TL-SM5310-T.
- 10Gbps up to 30 m on Cat 6a; 2.5G/1G/100Mbps up to 100 m on Cat 5e or better.
- Plug and play, hot pluggable, with a metal casing.
- Works in most SFP+ equipment, but check vendor restrictions.
